In a landmark recognition blending sports excellence with public service, the West Bengal Government has appointed Ms. Richa Ghosh, star wicketkeeper-batsman of the Indian women’s cricket team, as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the West Bengal Police. Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee personally handed over the appointment letter to Ms. Ghosh during a grand felicitation ceremony hosted by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

The appointment underscores the state government’s continued efforts to promote sports-driven empowerment and youth inspiration, rewarding outstanding athletes who bring national pride through their achievements on the global stage.

Champion of India’s First-Ever ICC Women’s World Cup Victory

Ms. Richa Ghosh played a decisive role in India’s historic ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 victory, where the Indian team defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final. Her crucial innings of 34 runs powered India to a match-winning total of nearly 300 runs, ending South Africa’s dream and marking India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup triumph.

Her performance symbolized India’s growing dominance in women’s cricket and the emergence of new sporting icons who embody perseverance, skill, and national pride.

State Felicitations: Banga Bhusan, Gold Honors, and CAB Recognition

Recognizing her contribution, the West Bengal government bestowed upon Ms. Ghosh the “Banga Bhusan” award, one of the state’s highest civilian honors. Along with the award, she received a gold chain from the government, while the Cricket Association of Bengal presented her with a golden bat and golden ball as symbols of her match-winning performance.

Ms. Ghosh was also presented with a cash prize of Rs. 13.4 million, corresponding to the 3.4 million runs she scored in the tournament’s final — a unique tribute connecting her achievement to her contribution in the World Cup’s decisive moment.

Growing Trend: Cricketers Transitioning into Public Service

Ms. Richa Ghosh joins a growing list of Indian cricketers being recognized through prestigious government appointments. Earlier this year, Ms. Deepti Sharma, who was named Player of the Tournament in the same World Cup, was appointed as DSP in the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Similarly, in October last year, Mr. Mohammed Siraj, fast bowler of the Indian men’s cricket team, was appointed as DSP in the Telangana Police. These appointments reflect a national shift toward honoring athletes with public service roles that integrate discipline, patriotism, and leadership.

A New Era of Sports and State Development

The appointment of Ms. Richa Ghosh signifies more than a personal achievement — it represents India’s evolving approach to sports governance, where athletic excellence is directly linked with civic leadership and empowerment. The West Bengal government’s proactive recognition of athletes underlines a developmental vision that merges sports, gender equality, and public service into a shared framework of progress.
