Gandhinagar: Under the guidance of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) is playing a pivotal role in realizing the vision of a “Green Gandhinagar” as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. The city is moving toward a zero-waste model by converting organic waste into high-quality vermicompost through a state-of-the-art vermicompost plant.
Advanced Vermicompost Plant for Scientific Waste Management
The GMC’s vermicompost facility collects wet waste from residential areas, hotels, and vegetable markets. According to Bhima Bhai Kharadi, in-charge of the plant, the process involves:
- Piling kitchen, garden, and vegetable waste
- Draining water and allowing partial decomposition for 15–25 days
- Grinding the partially decomposed material and adding earthworms
- Producing nutrient-rich vermicompost within 15 days
The plant transforms around 100 metric tons of daily waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, supporting both urban green spaces and agricultural needs.
Boosting Agriculture and Natural Farming
The vermicompost produced at the Gandhinagar plant is used in:
- City gardens, nurseries, and green areas
- Nearby farming communities, including Bhiloda in North Gujarat
This initiative not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also supports natural farming campaigns, helping farmers access nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.
Capacity and Branding for Wider Impact
According to GMC Commissioner J.N. Vaghela, the plant has an annual capacity exceeding 2,000 tons, producing premium vermicompost enriched with earthworms. The GMC is also preparing to brand this organic fertilizer, which will:
- Increase revenue
- Ensure wider availability of high-quality compost
- Promote eco-friendly agriculture in the region
A Model for Environmental and Economic Sustainability
GMC’s vermicompost initiative showcases a perfect example of waste-to-resource conversion, combining environmental protection with economic benefits. By turning city waste into valuable organic fertilizer, Gandhinagar is setting a benchmark for sustainable urban waste management in Gujarat.
