Lucknow: With GK Goswami, the founding Director of the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences (UPSIFS), set to retire on September 30, 2025, speculation is rife over the future leadership of the institution and whether Goswami’s association will continue in a new capacity post-retirement.
The senior IPS officer of the 1997 Uttar Pradesh cadre, known for his contributions to law enforcement and forensic science education, will retire upon turning 60.
No Official Successor Yet, Buzz About Post-Retirement Role
As per sources in Lucknow’s administrative circles, the Uttar Pradesh government is yet to finalize a successor for the key post. If no suitable candidate emerges in time, Goswami could be retained in an advisory or special assignment role, given his central role in building the institute from the ground up.
Officials familiar with the matter say that his institutional knowledge and network in national and international forensic science communities could make him a valuable asset even after retirement.
Pioneering Leadership Since Inception
GK Goswami was appointed as the first Director of UPSIFS, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 16, 2023. The institute, envisioned as a center of excellence in forensic education, training, and research, launched its first academic session in 2023 under his guidance.
His leadership helped in operationalizing infrastructure, recruiting faculty, and formalizing partnerships with forensic science agencies and academic institutions.
Key Questions Remain Ahead of September 30
With less than a month to go before Goswami’s retirement, several questions remain:
- Will the government name a new director in time?
- Will Goswami be given a special advisory or honorary role post-retirement?
- How will leadership continuity be maintained at UPSIFS during this transitional phase?
A formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks as the government evaluates internal and external candidates for the institute’s top post.
