NEW DELHI: Seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Gourangalal Das has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday.
Das, a 1999 batch IFS officer, is currently serving as Joint Secretary heading the East Asia Division in the MEA — a critical post, especially in light of recent geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific.
“He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the MEA said in its official statement.
Key Role in India-China Talks Amid Ladakh Standoff
In his current capacity, Das has played a central role in the ongoing negotiations between India and China, aimed at resolving the protracted standoff in Eastern Ladakh, which has strained bilateral ties since mid-2020. His strategic insights and diplomatic skills have been key in shaping India’s calibrated approach to dealing with its northern neighbor.
