NEW DELHI: Seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Gourangalal Das has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday.

Das, a 1999 batch IFS officer, is currently serving as Joint Secretary heading the East Asia Division in the MEA — a critical post, especially in light of recent geopolitical developments in the Indo-Pacific.

“He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the MEA said in its official statement.

Key Role in India-China Talks Amid Ladakh Standoff

In his current capacity, Das has played a central role in the ongoing negotiations between India and China, aimed at resolving the protracted standoff in Eastern Ladakh, which has strained bilateral ties since mid-2020. His strategic insights and diplomatic skills have been key in shaping India’s calibrated approach to dealing with its northern neighbor.

Impressive Diplomatic Career Spanning U.S., China, and Taiwan

Gourangalal Das brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to his new role. His previous appointments include:

Director General of the India-Taipei Association, India’s representative office in Taiwan, where he significantly enhanced bilateral ties.

Joint Secretary (Americas) at MEA, dealing with India’s strategic partnership with the United States.

Counsellor (Political) at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Various roles in the Indian mission in Beijing, where he built expertise in Chinese affairs.

Deputy Secretary, External Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) during the tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Das also played a formative role in establishing the Government of India’s internal China think tank, offering policy frameworks and insights on East Asia.

Academic Brilliance and Personal Life

Born in Barpeta, Assam, Gourangalal Das is known not only for his diplomatic acumen but also for his academic brilliance. Despite the loss of his father, Motilal Das, a former chairman of the Barpeta Municipality Board, during his school years, he excelled:

  • HSLC Topper in 1991
  • HS Science Stream (2nd Rank) in 1993
  • Graduated with Honours in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi
  • Postgraduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics

He is married to Harsha Das, a senior official in the Delhi Government and daughter of a railway officer from Jharkhand. They have two children — a son in Class X and a daughter in Class V, both studying in Delhi. His brother, Hemanga Lal Das, works as an engineer at Facebook’s California office.
