In a significant stride toward modernising postal services, Jammu & Kashmir has inaugurated its first “Gen Z Post Office” at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Vijaypur campus on December 17, 2025.

This pioneering initiative under the Department of Posts aims to transform traditional postal counters into youth-centric, technology-enabled service hubs tailored to the evolving needs of Generation Z. With this development, AIIMS Vijaypur stands as the first AIIMS in the country to host such a futuristic postal facility, marking a milestone in the public service landscape of the Union Territory.

Background of AIIMS Vijaypur Gen Z Post Office

India Post, one of the oldest government institutions in the country, has embarked on a nationwide effort to reimagine postal services for the 21st century. Over recent years, the department has piloted modern, interactive post office models at educational institutions and urban campuses to better connect with younger citizens.

These “Gen Z Post Offices” blend innovative digital services, contemporary design, and enhanced customer experience to make postal facilities more accessible, appealing, and relevant to today’s youth.

Similar initiatives have been rolled out across other states — including Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh — highlighting India Post’s strategic shift toward engaging the digital generation. Features such as interactive kiosks, Wi-Fi zones, creative seating and personalised stamp services underline this transformation.

The Inauguration Ceremony of AIIMS Vijaypur Gen Z Post Office

The AIIMS Vijaypur Gen Z Post Office was formally inaugurated on 17th December 2025 by Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of AIIMS Vijaypur. The ceremony was also graced by Shri D. S. V. R. Murthy, Chief Postmaster General of Jammu & Kashmir Circle, and Shri Shah Nawaz Khan, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices from the Jammu Postal Division. The event was attended by senior postal officials, faculty members, administrative staff, and enthusiastic students from the institute.

In his remarks, Prof. Gupta highlighted the alignment of this initiative with AIIMS Vijaypur’s mission to provide modern, accessible and student-friendly public services. He underscored that the establishment of this new post office reflects a commitment to adapting traditional government services to match the expectations of a more dynamic, tech-savvy generation.

Design and Services: A Post Office for the Digital Age

Unlike conventional post offices, the Gen Z Post Office has been conceptualised specifically for young users — incorporating features that speak directly to their preferences and lifestyle. Key offerings include:

  • Contemporary and inviting ambience designed to appeal to youth culture.
  • Digital payment facilities that streamline transactions.
  • Simplified service delivery mechanisms, making it easier for users to access postal functions.

Integrated access to postal, banking and insurance services under one roof, especially with support from India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).

To commemorate the inauguration and celebrate its distinction as the first Gen Z outlet in the Jammu & Kashmir Circle, a special postal cancellation mark was issued on the inaugural day.

This mark was impressed on all outgoing mail booked from the AIIMS Vijaypur Post Office as a keepsake of the historic launch.

Promoting Awareness and Engagement

Beyond mail and courier services, the new Gen Z Post Office has a broader role in spreading awareness about government services among students and the wider institute community. It aims to educate its users on:

  • Postal savings schemes that offer reliable investment opportunities.
  • Digital banking services through India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), fostering financial inclusion.
  • Value-added services including insurance solutions and digital offerings tailored for youth adoption.

These efforts will help demystify the full range of services offered by India Post, encouraging young adults, healthcare professionals, and campus residents to engage confidently with public service platforms.
