Driven by Policy, People, and Partnerships
Guided by Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel and supported by Forest and Environment Minister Mr. Mulubhai Bera, the state’s forest strategy has combined community participation, policy reforms, and public-private partnerships to strengthen ecological stewardship.
The contributions of eco-conscious citizens, voluntary organizations, and social forestry initiatives — such as Panchvati village gardens, green corridors, and Amrit Sarovar plantations — have collectively boosted the state’s green footprint.
‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign Boosts Plantation Record
Under the national campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam“, Gujarat planted a record 174.8 million trees in 2024–25, ranking second after Uttar Pradesh. The next phase of the campaign — ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’ — is currently underway.
On World Environment Day 2025, the Hon’ble Prime Minister launched the Green Aravalli Project, further accelerating Gujarat’s plantation momentum.

National Context
As per the India State of Forest Report 2023, India’s total green cover stands at 25.17% of its geographic area, with:
- Forest cover: 715,342.61 sq kms (21.76%)
- Tree cover: 112,014.34 sq kms (3.41%)
- Target (per National Forest Policy 1988): 33% green cover
Gujarat’s growth, though below the national target, marks a notable leap in non-forest area greening, making it a model state for urban and rural afforestation.
