Amidst a recent development, a former IAS officer of the 1998 batch and a present parliamentarian (Lok Sabha MP from Haryana’s Hisar constituency), Mr. Brijendra Singh, quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to join the Indian National Congress, merely weeks before the 2024 LS polls. Mr. Singh, the son of veteran politician Chaudhary Birender Singh, also vacated his MP post while switching his political affiliation.
Senior leaders from Congress welcomed the IAS-turned-politician with open arms and hinted that he is expected to contest polls from his same constituency but this time as a candidate of the Grand Old Party.
Mr Brijendra is a native of Jind, Haryana. He is also a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Standing Committee on Defence. He took voluntary retirement after serving the country for 21 years. In 1998, he secured 9th rank in the Civil Services Examination. He has done MA in Modern History from JNU.
The former bureaucrat comes from a lineage of many eminent politicians. His great-grandfather, Mr. Chhotu Ram, was a pioneering Jat leader, while his father, Mr. Chaudhary Birender Singh, had served as the Union Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation and the Union Minister of Steel in the NDA government.
In the last Lok Sabha polls (2019), Mr. Brijendra Singh got the better of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader, Mr. Dushyant Chautala, and the Congress leader, Ms. Bhavya Bishnoi, to win Hisar Lok Sabha seat.
His father Birendra Singh was a Rajya Sabha member till 2022. He was elected MLA from Uchana five times in 1977, 1982, 1994, 1996 and 2005 and has been a minister in the state government thrice. Birendra Singh became MP from Hisar Lok Sabha constituency in 1984 by defeating Omprakash Chautala.
I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP,due to compelling political reasons.
