New Delhi: India rare earth production 2030 is gaining strong momentum as the government pushes to reduce import dependence and strengthen critical mineral supply chains.

According to an official report, India aims to achieve a domestic production capacity of 5,000 tonnes of rare earth permanent magnets by 2030.

This major step is part of a broader strategy to support fast-growing sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, and defence. The government is also accelerating lithium exploration and opening the sector to private participation to boost domestic capabilities.

Details of India Rare Earth Production Target

The Ministry of Atomic Energy has confirmed that India is actively working to scale up domestic production of rare earth permanent magnets.

  • Current demand: Around 4,000 tonnes annually
  • Projected demand by 2030: Nearly 8,000 tonnes
  • Target production capacity: 5,000 tonnes by 2030

This gap highlights the urgent need for domestic manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports, especially from global supply chains dominated by a few countries.

India Rare Earth Production Target: Boost Through SHAKTI and Policy Reforms

The government is introducing reforms to speed up exploration and production.

Key Measures:

  • Liberalisation of mining rules
  • Opening critical minerals to private sector participation under SHAKTI framework
  • Safeguards for strategic minerals like uranium

These steps aim to attract investment, improve efficiency, and strengthen India’s position in critical minerals.

Lithium Exploration Expands Across India

Lithium is a key mineral for batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.

Current Developments:

  • Exploration underway in Degana (Rajasthan)
  • Additional efforts in Reasi district (Jammu & Kashmir)
  • Managed by the Ministry of Mines

Initial surveys are already in progress, and further exploration is expected to begin soon.

New Rare Earth Corridors Announced

To support processing and value addition, the government has announced rare earth corridors in multiple states:

  • Tamil Nadu
  • Odisha
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Kerala

These corridors will help build a strong ecosystem for mining, processing, and manufacturing.

India Rare Earth Production Target: Pilot Projects and Industrial Expansion

India has already started pilot projects to boost production:

  • Neodymium-iron-boron magnet project launched
  • Samarium-cobalt magnet plant operational in Visakhapatnam
    • Current capacity: 500 tonnes/year
    • Planned expansion: 2,000 tonnes, eventually 5,000 tonnes

These projects are critical to building indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

What is the Importance of India Rare Earth Production Target

Rare earth and lithium minerals are essential for multiple industries:

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Renewable Energy (solar, wind)
  • Electronics manufacturing
  • Defence and aerospace
  • Space technologies
  • Emerging technologies like AI

These minerals are crucial for India’s clean energy transition and future technological growth.

Environmental Safeguards and Challenges

The government has clarified that:

  • Mining activities will follow strict environmental regulations
  • Oversight will remain with the Ministry of Mines
  • Focus on reducing illegal mining

Exploration conditions vary depending on geology, with some regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Jharkhand having complex deposits.

India’s Strategy: Self-Reliance in Critical Minerals

India is adopting a whole-of-government approach to:

  • Reduce import dependency
  • Strengthen domestic supply chains
  • Support industrial growth
  • Build resilience in strategic sectors

This aligns with India’s long-term vision of becoming a global manufacturing and technology hub.
