Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has laid the keel for the third vessel in its Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) project being built for Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG. The milestone highlights GRSE’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling international orders while boosting India’s global shipbuilding presence under the “Make in India, Make for the World” vision.
Largest MPV Contract in GRSE History
The current contract represents the largest MPV order in GRSE’s history and reflects the shipyard’s focus on diversifying its commercial portfolio. Initially contracted for four vessels in June 2024, the order has now expanded to twelve, with the ninth to twelfth hybrid propulsion MPVs signed in September 2025.

Technical Details and Capabilities of the MPVs
Each MPV will measure 120 metres in length with a 17-metre beam and a 5.85-metre draught. The vessels are capable of carrying 7,500 metric tonnes of cargo, featuring a single large cargo hold suitable for bulk, general, and project cargo. The design allows containers to be carried on hatch covers and accommodates multiple large windmill blades on deck, providing high operational flexibility.
Collaboration with German Firms and Certification
The project is executed in close collaboration with German partners such as F.H. Bertling, ForestWave Navigation/Schulte & Bruns, and Delft Shipping. Technical design expertise is provided by M/s SEDS in partnership with GRSE, while DNV will certify the vessels, ensuring international standards in ship construction and safety.
