Kolkata/Hamburg: Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has signed a contract valued at USD 62.44 million with Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co. KG for the construction of four advanced Hybrid Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs). The agreement was finalized in Hamburg, Germany, and marks a significant step in expanding GRSE’s footprint in the global commercial shipbuilding sector.

Extension of a Successful Partnership

This contract is a natural continuation of the successful collaboration between GRSE and Carsten Rehder, following the ongoing 7,500 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessel project currently under execution at GRSE’s Kolkata shipyard. The current order includes four hybrid propulsion MPVs, with provisions for two additional vessels of similar design in the future, reflecting growing confidence in GRSE’s capabilities.

State-of-the-Art Hybrid Technology for Sustainable Shipping

The newly contracted vessels will incorporate battery-assisted hybrid propulsion systems designed to boost fuel efficiency and significantly reduce emissions. These features align closely with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decarbonization goals, emphasizing environmental sustainability. Each vessel will measure 120 meters in length and 17 meters in width, with a maximum draft of 6.75 meters.

Versatile Cargo Handling for Renewable Energy Sector

Designed with a large cargo hold capable of carrying 7,500 metric tonnes, the vessels will accommodate bulk, general, and project cargoes. Additionally, they offer flexibility to carry containers on hatch covers. A notable feature is their unique ability to transport multiple large windmill blades on deck, catering specifically to the logistics demands of the growing renewable energy sector.

Milestone in GRSE’s Commercial Vessel Exports

The MPV program commenced with an initial contract for four vessels in June 2024, followed by subsequent contracts in September and December 2024, and March 2025, bringing the total to eight vessels. GRSE officially began construction with steel cutting for the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series on April 17, 2025, marking the company’s first major international export order in the commercial shipbuilding segment.

Looking Ahead

This contract reinforces GRSE’s position as a competitive player in the international shipbuilding market, showcasing its ability to deliver modern, eco-friendly vessels tailored to emerging industry needs. The partnership with Carsten Rehder continues to open new avenues for GRSE’s global expansion and technological advancement.
