Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) marked a significant milestone with the signing of a contract for the major refit of Lightship ‘Indira Point’. The agreement was formalized on May 21, 2025, between Commander Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Mr. N. Muruganandam, Director General, Lighthouses and Lightships, during an official ceremony.
Under the terms of the contract, GRSE will undertake extensive dry dock and afloat repairs of the vessel, focusing on maintenance of the hull, propulsion systems, critical onboard machinery, and other vital systems. The refit is to be completed within 300 days, reflecting the urgency and importance of preserving this vital navigational asset.
Lightship ‘Indira Point’ plays a pivotal role in maintaining lighthouses and navigational aids along India’s coastline, especially at Indira Point, the southernmost tip of the country. Its operations are essential for ensuring maritime safety and supporting trade and commerce in the region.
This contract highlights GRSE’s expanding footprint in the non-defence maritime sector, further solidifying its reputation for handling complex shipbuilding and refit projects.
