The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department in Uttar Pradesh has been rocked by controversy after serious allegations of harassment were made by a female officer against an Additional Commissioner posted in the Noida Zone. The IAS officer, who is himself facing allegations, has been directed to constitute an inquiry committee into the matter, a move that has sparked widespread protests within the department.
Accused Officer Asked to Form Inquiry Panel
The Principal Secretary of State Tax had earlier ordered an inquiry into the harassment complaints made by women officers and staff members. However, departmental employees expressed shock and anger after the same Additional Commissioner facing allegations was entrusted with forming the investigation committee. Employees have argued that this raises questions about the impartiality of the inquiry.
Departmental Staff and Flying Squad Raise Objections
The discontent has spread across the state, with officers from other departments also voicing objections. The Noida Flying Squad Unit has formally written to the Commissioner of State Tax demanding that the investigation be carried out by a neutral officer rather than a committee formed under the accused. They argued that the credibility of the inquiry would be compromised, pointing out that even on the Independence Day holiday, the accused officer allegedly opened offices for file inspections, raising further concerns.
Fresh Complaint Sent to Chief Minister
Amid the uproar, women officers and employees of the GST Zonal Office have sent a fresh written complaint to Chief Minister Mr. Yogi Adityanath. The complaint alleges that the Additional Commissioner has threatened women staff with professional harm and used abusive language. It further mentions instances of inappropriate behavior, including late-night video calls and intimidation inside his office chamber. The Chief Minister’s Office has reportedly taken cognizance of these complaints.
Suspension of Complainant Raises Questions
In a parallel development, the female officer who had lodged the harassment complaint has been suspended in connection with an old bribery case in Ghaziabad. While officials claim the suspension is unrelated, many within the department are questioning the timing, alleging it could be linked to her complaint.
Growing Administrative Pressure
The issue has escalated into a major administrative crisis for the GST department in Uttar Pradesh, with employees across zones demanding a transparent and impartial inquiry. The matter is also being closely monitored at higher levels of the state government, as pressure mounts for a fair resolution.
