Rajkot: In a major step to strengthen spiritual, cultural and heritage tourism, the government of Gujarat has approved development projects worth over ₹28.68 crore in a single day.
The projects aim to modernize tourist and pilgrim facilities while preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the state. Several key destinations, including temples, forts and historic sites, will benefit from the funding.
Officials said the initiative reflects the state government’s focus on enhancing visitor infrastructure and promoting Gujarat as a major tourism destination in India.
₹20.09 Crore for Holistic Development of Harshad Mata Temple
A major portion of the funding—₹20.09 crore—has been allocated for the holistic development of the renowned Harshad Mata Temple.
The temple is an important spiritual destination for devotees, attracting thousands of pilgrims throughout the year. The development plan aims to upgrade pilgrim facilities, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall visitor experience while maintaining the temple’s traditional and spiritual atmosphere.
Authorities believe that improved infrastructure will also encourage more religious tourism to the region.
Upgrades Planned for Historic Uparkot Fort in Junagadh
Another key project focuses on the historic Uparkot Fort in Junagadh, one of the oldest and most significant heritage sites in Gujarat.
Under the first phase of development, the fort will see several modern facilities introduced, including:
- A new parking area for visitors
- A tourist information centre
- Installation of two state-of-the-art lifts to improve accessibility
These upgrades aim to make the historic fort more convenient and accessible for tourists, especially elderly visitors and families.
Restoration of Historic Gandhi Ashram in Godhra
The state government has also approved ₹3.36 crore for the restoration of the historic Gandhi Ashram, which was originally established in 1917.
The restoration project aims to preserve the site’s historical significance linked to India’s freedom movement and promote it as an educational and heritage tourism destination.
Officials say the project will help highlight Gujarat’s contribution to India’s independence struggle and strengthen historical awareness among visitors.
Support for Tribal Cultural Festival Dang Darbar 2026
To promote tribal culture and traditions, the government has allocated ₹1.25 crore for the celebration of the Dang Darbar 2026.
Dang Darbar is a traditional tribal festival held in the Dang region, known for its vibrant cultural performances, folk traditions and community gatherings.
The funding will help organise the festival on a larger scale, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities in Gujarat.
Strengthening Gujarat’s Tourism Potential
With these projects, the government aims to improve infrastructure at key religious, historical and cultural destinations, making them more attractive for both domestic and international tourists.
Officials believe that investments in heritage conservation, pilgrim facilities and cultural events will significantly enhance Gujarat’s reputation as a major tourism hub in India, while also preserving its unique cultural identity.
