GANDHINAGAR: A high‑level delegation from Commonwealth Sport arrived in Gujarat on Wednesday to assess preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the organisation’s first official engagement since Ahmedabad was confirmed as the host city for the centenary edition of the multi‑sport event.
The visit underscores the importance of early planning and international coordination as India prepares to host a historic milestone in the Commonwealth Games movement.

The delegation’s visit began with a meeting with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar, where senior officials discussed infrastructure, logistics, and long‑term planning.
During the interaction, officials outlined the schedule for the visit, which includes detailed inspections of proposed competition venues and key facilities, as well as consultations with government representatives to ensure timely delivery of event requirements.

Donald Rukare, head of the Commonwealth Sport delegation, extended a formal invitation to Chief Minister Patel to attend the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026, set to begin on July 23 in Glasgow, Scotland. 2030 Games to Mark Historic Centenary Edition
The 2030 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Ahmedabad, will commemorate 100 years since the inaugural Games in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. This edition marks a significant milestone in the history of the Commonwealth sporting tradition.
Hosting the centenary Games is expected to not only celebrate a century of athletic excellence and unity but also bolster India’s credentials as a global sporting destination.
Officials believe that successful delivery of the 2030 Games could enhance India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, strengthening the country’s profile on the world sporting stage.
Retrospective: From Hamilton 1930 to Birmingham 2022
The first Commonwealth Games in 1930 featured a relatively small group of nations, reflecting the early stage of the movement. Over the decades, the event has grown in scale and stature. The most recent Games, held in Birmingham, England, in 2022, saw Australia top the medal table, followed by England, Canada, India, and New Zealand, showcasing the competitive spirit and diverse participation that define the event.
Looking Ahead
As preparations accelerate in Gujarat, the visit by Commonwealth Sport officials signals robust international support for India’s ambition to host a successful and memorable 2030 Commonwealth Games. With continued coordination, infrastructure development, and strategic planning, Ahmedabad is poised to deliver a landmark sporting event that honours the legacy of a century of Commonwealth athletic competition.
