New Delhi: The Gujarat civic body administrators appointment has become a key administrative step after the tenure of elected representatives in several municipal corporations ended. The Gujarat government has appointed senior IAS officers to manage civic administration in major cities until fresh elections are conducted.
According to an official government notification, administrators have been assigned to Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Bhavnagar Municipal Corporations. These officers will handle daily governance and administrative responsibilities until the local body elections are held in the state.
Details of Gujarat Civic Body Appointment
The Government of Gujarat has introduced a temporary administrative arrangement after the five-year tenure of elected members in several urban local bodies expired.
As per the official order, senior IAS officers have been appointed as administrators for four municipal corporations. They will supervise civic governance and ensure smooth functioning of city services until elections are completed.
The decision aims to maintain administrative continuity in the state’s major urban centers.
IAS Officers Assigned to Each Municipal Corporation
The government has allocated specific IAS officers to each city based on their administrative experience and previous roles in municipal governance.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
Mukesh Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Education Department, has been appointed as the administrator for Ahmedabad.
He has previously worked in key administrative positions and is expected to oversee city management until elections are held.
Surat Municipal Corporation
Milind Torawane, Secretary in the Education Department, will serve as the administrator for Surat.
His earlier experience in civic administration is expected to help manage the city’s governance during the interim period.
Vadodara Municipal Corporation
Shalini Agrawal, Managing Director of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), has been assigned responsibility for Vadodara.
Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation
Harshad Patel, Secretary of the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, will oversee civic administration in Bhavnagar.
All these officers have previously served as Municipal Commissioners in their respective cities, giving them direct experience in urban administration.
Jamnagar and Rajkot Announcements Expected Soon
The Gujarat government has not yet announced administrators for Jamnagar and Rajkot Municipal Corporations.
Officials indicate that appointments for these cities are expected to be announced shortly.
Why Elections Were Delayed in Gujarat Civic Bodies
Local body elections could not be conducted on time due to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The SIR exercise involves the revision and verification of electoral rolls. This process is conducted to ensure accurate voter data before elections take place. Because of this ongoing revision process, elections were postponed, leading to the temporary appointment of administrators.
