New Delhi / Gandhinagar: The 7th edition of the Prime Minister’s Mementos e-Auction brings the spotlight once again on India’s vibrant cultural diversity, with Gujarat emerging as a key contributor to this year’s collection. A total of 86 distinct artifacts from the state are featured among over 1,300 gifts and souvenirs presented to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now open for public bidding.
Launched in 2019, the e-auction initiative allows citizens from across India and abroad to own a piece of national significance while contributing directly to the Namami Gange Project—a flagship programme focused on rejuvenating the Ganga River. The mementos range from paintings, handicrafts, sculptures, textiles, tribal art, sports memorabilia, and ceremonial items that represent the cultural essence of their origin states.
Gujarat’s Folk Art in the Limelight
This year, the collection from Gujarat stands out for its remarkable artistry and cultural storytelling. Among the key highlights are:
Lippan Art Frame from Kutch
One of the standout pieces is a vibrant Lippan art frame from the Kutch region, featuring the divine image of Lord Ganesha. Known for its mirror work and clay relief patterns, Lippan art is traditionally created by the Rabari and Mutwa communities. Used to decorate interior walls, this art form is believed to protect homes and reflect harmony with nature. The frame is both a spiritual symbol and an artistic marvel that blends folklore with community tradition.
Bhil Tribal Jacket
Also included is a striking embroidered jacket by Gujarat’s Bhil tribe, a garment that showcases bold colors and intricate patterns. With detailed white embroidery on the collar, shoulders, and front, the jacket reflects the Bhil community’s rich artistic language and their deep connection to cultural identity and tradition.
Mata ni Pachedi Textile Art
A meticulously crafted Mata ni Pachedi textile painting is another gem in the auction. This rare form of art, meaning behind the Mother Goddess, is traditionally made by the Vaghari community. The piece serves as a portable shrine and depicts Devi Lakshmi in the central panel, surrounded by deities, devotees, and symbolic motifs rendered in vibrant red and black tones.
Art with a Purpose
Beyond their artistic value, each item in the auction contributes to a greater cause. All proceeds from the sales are directed towards the Namami Gange initiative, reinforcing the fusion of culture, charity, and environmental stewardship.
The Gujarat items also include Rogan art, textile shawls, and folk paintings that narrate everyday life, spirituality, and indigenous practices. These mementos serve not just as decorative pieces, but as cultural ambassadors of India’s heritage.
Preserving Culture, Supporting Nation
The e-auction of PM Modi’s mementos is a unique convergence of tradition, national pride, and civic participation. Gujarat’s strong representation in the 2025 edition reaffirms the state’s enduring legacy of craftsmanship and its contribution to India’s soft power.
