New Delhi, July 4, 2025 — In a remarkable milestone for India’s clean energy transition, Gujarat has officially become the number one state in wind energy with a total installed capacity of 13,624.78 MW as of May 30, 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
This development places Gujarat firmly at the helm of the country’s wind energy movement, outpacing other leading wind states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
Gujarat’s Wind Energy Potential
Gujarat’s rise to the top is attributed to a combination of geographic advantage and policy support. Its long coastline, robust wind corridors, and supportive industrial infrastructure have enabled massive deployment of wind turbines—both inland and along the coast.
Over the past five years, the state has aggressively expanded its renewable energy projects under the Gujarat Wind Power Policy and in coordination with national initiatives like the PM-KUSUM and Green Energy Corridor schemes.
India’s Wind Energy Landscape: A Growing Force
As per MNRE data, India’s total installed wind capacity now stands at 51,292 MW, with Gujarat alone contributing nearly 26.6% of the national total.
India has set a target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, with wind energy expected to be a critical contributor alongside solar and hydro.

National Recognition and Vision for the Future
The MNRE, in its official communication, highlighted Gujarat’s leadership by stating:
“From coastal winds to inland innovation, the state is now leading India’s wind power journey. A milestone for Gujarat, a push forward for India’s clean energy future.”
The campaign tagline accompanying the announcement-“Strong Winds. Stronger India”-captures the spirit of India’s renewable energy goals that hinge on state-level contributions like Gujarat’s.
The Ministry continues to emphasize the need for inter-state cooperation, better transmission infrastructure, and technological innovation to sustain this momentum and replicate Gujarat’s model in other states.
About MNRE
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is the nodal agency of the Government of India responsible for promoting clean and renewable energy. It formulates policies and programs for the development of wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and other green energy sources in line with India’s commitment to sustainable development and the Paris Climate Accord.
