Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government will commence the purchase of tur (pigeon pea) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) across the state from February 23, Agriculture and Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani announced on Thursday. Over 1.33 lakh farmers have registered to sell their produce under this scheme.
The decision was taken during a State Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of the ongoing Legislative Assembly session, focusing on providing farmers with fair prices and economic security.
MSP for Tur Set at ₹8,000 per Quintal
Minister Vaghani stated that the MSP for tur for the 2025-26 season has been fixed at ₹8,000 per quintal (₹1,600 per 20 kg). The announcement ahead of the sowing season encouraged extensive cultivation across Gujarat.
“The Central government announces MSPs for various crops and purchases produce at these rates to ensure that farmers receive fair and profitable prices for their harvests,” he added.
130 Purchase Centres to Facilitate Procurement
To ensure smooth operations, approximately 130 purchase centres have been designated across the state based on sowing areas and expected production.
Farmers registered for the MSP scheme will receive prior SMS notifications indicating their allotted purchase centre and the quantity to present for sale. Minister Vaghani assured that the government is fully prepared to procure crops from all registered farmers.
Budget Boosts Agriculture and Farmer Welfare
The announcement follows the 2026-27 Gujarat state budget, presented by Finance Minister Kanu Desai, which allocates ₹24,022 crore to the Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Department.
“The budget focuses on agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, roads, and all key sectors, ensuring holistic development for the state,” Minister Vaghani said.
He highlighted that the budget emphasizes agricultural mechanization, aiming to reduce farmers’ labor and production costs while increasing efficiency and productivity.
Farmers’ Economic Security and Growth
The tur procurement initiative at MSP is part of Gujarat’s broader strategy to empower farmers, provide economic stability, and promote rural development. With systematic planning, timely communication, and adequate infrastructure, the government aims to ensure fair prices and maximum benefit for cultivators across the state.
