A few days after the appointment of Gyanendra Pratap Singh, a 1991 batch Indian Police Service officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, as the next Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force, the Assam government has relieved him to take up his new role on Central Deputation. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved Gyanendra Pratap Singh’s appointment as the CRPF Chief on January 19, with his tenure lasting until his retirement in November 2027.
In the interim, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led administration in Assam has assigned Harmeet Singh, a 1992 batch IPS officer from the same cadre, to serve as the acting Director General of Police for Assam. Harmeet Singh, who is scheduled to retire in December 2028, is widely expected to be confirmed as the regular DGP of Assam in the near future.
The CRPF has been functioning under temporary leadership since December 31, 2024, following the retirement of Anish Dayal Singh, a 1988 batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Currently, Vipul Kumar, a 1993 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and Special Director General of the CRPF, has been serving as the officiating Director General. Gyanendra Pratap Singh is likely to assume charge as the Director General of the CRPF today.
