Sriharikota: In a landmark achievement for India’s space program, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched NISAR — the first-ever joint Earth observation satellite developed in collaboration with NASA — using the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F16) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) proudly stands as a key industrial partner in this historic mission, having supplied critical space-grade components essential for the satellite’s launch and deployment.
Precision Performance of GSLV-F16 Boosts India’s Space Ambitions
The launch saw flawless execution of each stage, including perfect separation, cryogenic ignition, and performance of the cryo stage, culminating in the successful insertion of NISAR into its designated orbit. This mission marks a significant step in India’s growing capabilities in space technology and international collaboration.
HAL’s Indispensable Contribution to the NISAR Mission
HAL, India’s premier aerospace manufacturer, supplied the Satellite Bus Structure — the critical framework that houses the NISAR satellite’s payload and subsystems. Beyond this, HAL also provided four fully integrated L-40 liquid boosters that augment the launch vehicle’s thrust, nine types of riveted structural components, four varieties of welded propellant tankages, and two types of feedlines that ensure safe and efficient fuel flow.
Being the sole manufacturer in India capable of producing such large and complex space-worthy structures, HAL’s involvement was pivotal to the mission’s success. The company’s expertise reflects India’s technological self-reliance and robust industrial ecosystem supporting ISRO’s ambitious space exploration goals.
A Step Forward in Indo-US Space Collaboration
NISAR represents a groundbreaking collaboration between ISRO and NASA, focusing on Earth observation with advanced radar imaging capabilities to study land and ice movement, ecosystems, and natural hazards globally. The mission is expected to provide critical data for disaster management, climate change research, and resource management.
HAL’s Commitment to India’s Space Future
This launch underscores HAL’s dedication to advancing India’s aerospace sector by continuously developing indigenous capabilities for complex space structures and propulsion components. HAL’s sustained support plays a vital role in enabling ISRO to execute increasingly sophisticated missions, propelling India into the forefront of global space exploration.
