Chandigarh/Mohali: Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, suffered a serious cardiac emergency late Thursday night and was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Mohali, where doctors diagnosed a major heart attack and performed an open bypass surgery on Friday. Hospital authorities have confirmed that the senior bureaucrat is currently stable and recovering under observation.
Cardiac Emergency and Hospitalisation
According to hospital sources and reports, Anurag Rastogi complained of severe chest pain late Thursday night, following which he was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mohali. Doctors attending him diagnosed a major cardiac arrest, necessitating urgent surgical intervention.
An open heart bypass surgery was performed on Friday under the supervision of cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. P.S. Mahant. The surgery was described as uneventful.

In an official medical bulletin, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, stated:
“Mr. Anurag Rastogi, IAS, Chief Secretary, Haryana, was admitted for bypass surgery at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on January 9, 2026. Following an uneventful surgery, Mr. Anurag Rastogi is stable and recovering in the CTVS Intensive Care Unit.”

Advised Two Months of Bed Rest
According to reports quoting medical sources, Rastogi has been advised complete bed rest for at least two months as part of his post-operative recovery protocol. Doctors will continue to monitor his cardiac parameters closely during the recovery phase.
Senior Bureaucrat With Long Administrative Career
Anurag Rastogi is among the most senior IAS officers in the Haryana cadre, with a long and influential administrative career. Before assuming charge as Chief Secretary, he served in several key positions, including:
- Financial Commissioner (Revenue)
- Additional Chief Secretary (Finance and Planning)
These roles placed him at the heart of Haryana’s fiscal management and policy formulation processes over several years.
First IAS Officer to Serve Twice as Haryana Chief Secretary
Rastogi holds the unique distinction of being the first IAS officer in Haryana to serve as Chief Secretary twice. A native of Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh, he was scheduled to retire on June 30, 2025, coinciding with his 60th birthday.
However, in recognition of his experience and administrative continuity, the Haryana government granted him a one-year service extension, pushing his retirement date to June 30, 2026.
Recent SIT Questioning in IPS Officer Suicide Case
Notably, Rastogi’s name has also surfaced in the suicide case of senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. Just three days prior to his cardiac emergency, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case reportedly visited the Haryana Secretariat and questioned Rastogi for nearly an hour as part of the investigation.
Officials, however, have not indicated any direct linkage between the questioning and his medical condition.
Administration Monitoring the Situation
Senior officials in the Haryana government are closely monitoring Rastogi’s health condition. No official statement has yet been issued regarding interim administrative arrangements during his recovery period, though sources indicate that necessary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance.
