Chandigarh: A deepening controversy surrounds the postmortem of senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar (2021 batch). On Saturday afternoon, doctors, forensic experts, and a videography team arrived at the Chandigarh PGI mortuary to conduct the postmortem, but no family members were present to give consent.
Family Consent Crucial; Postmortem Delayed
Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, 2013 batch IPS officer, stated that the postmortem would only proceed once the family provides consent. Meanwhile, the body of IPS officer Puran Kumar has been lying at the PGI mortuary for four days, awaiting clearance for the last rites.
The family alleges that the body was forcibly moved from Sector 16 Government Hospital to PGI against their wishes, escalating tensions further.
Senior Police Officials Removed Amidst Growing Pressure
Following the incident, Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, an IPS officer of 2015 batch, has been removed from his post, with 2014 batch IPS officer Surendra Singh Bhoria appointed as his replacement. The removed SP has not been assigned any new posting yet.
Alok Mittal New DGP!
In a related development, Chief Minister Nayab Saini postponed a cabinet meeting to hold a special session with ministers regarding the case. Proposals are underway to send Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, an IPS officer of 1990 batch, on leave. Sources indicate that 1993 batch IPS officer Alok Mittal may be appointed as acting DGP during Kapoor’s leave.
Government Leaders Engage with Family
Cabinet Ministers Krishna Bedi and Krishnalal Panwar, accompanied by Chief Minister’s CPS Rajesh Khullar, visited the residence of 2001 batch IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, wife of the deceased officer, to discuss the ongoing situation and the proposal for the postmortem.
Chandigarh DGP Sagar Preet Hooda (1997 batch), IG Pushpendra Kumar, and SSP Kanwardeep Kaur also visited IAS Amneet at her Sector 24 residence on Saturday morning to pacify the family. Hooda confirmed that the postmortem will only be done after the family’s consent.
Family and Scheduled Castes Committee Demand Arrests Before Postmortem
In a strong show of defiance, Puran Kumar’s family along with Scheduled Castes representatives have formed a 31-member committee. They have made it clear that they will not allow the postmortem until DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and SP Narendra Bijarniya are arrested.
The committee plans to hold a grand meeting on Sunday, October 12, at 2 p.m. at the Guru Ravidas Gurdwara in Sector 20, Chandigarh, to discuss further course of action.
Political and Public Reactions Intensify
The case has drawn widespread attention, with leaders and the public visiting the family home. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also visited IAS Amneet P Kumar and urged the Haryana government not to compromise constitutional values to protect influential individuals.
Congress party leaders staged protests at district headquarters across Haryana demanding immediate action against the officers accused in the case. In Hisar, the Ravidas Mahasabha convened a meeting, while social organizations in Rohtak surrounded the SP’s residence in protest.
Investigation Demands and Security Concerns
IAS Amneet has demanded that a sitting High Court judge be appointed to investigate her husband’s death to ensure impartiality. She has also requested amendments to the FIR, insisting that all accused names be correctly recorded.
She voiced fears for the safety of her family, citing threats due to the sensitive nature of the case and the powerful people involved. She expressed concerns that the investigation will not be fair otherwise and fears the issue may be buried if the body is cremated without justice.
Late Friday night, Haryana Home Secretary Sumita Mishra, an IAS officer 1990 batch, met with IAS Amneet P. Kumar, after which she agreed to allow the postmortem, expected to begin soon.
Chief Minister Vows Thorough Probe
At Panchkula, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini assured that the government would carry out a thorough investigation and declared that no one, regardless of their influence, will be spared if found guilty. The government condemned harassment of any individual.
Uncertainty Looms Over Final Rites
Despite the ongoing talks and developments, the timing for the cremation of IPS Y. Puran Kumar’s body remains uncertain as the family awaits justice and assurances.
This case continues to develop with growing public interest and political involvement. Further updates will follow as the investigation and related proceedings progress.
