Chandigarh: Five days after the tragic suicide of senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar (2001 batch), the case remains unresolved, with neither the post-mortem completed nor the last rites performed.
The primary reason for the delay is the demand from Puran Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar (also 2001 batch), who insists that the officers named in the deceased’s suicide note be formally included as ‘suspects’ in the FIR and that appropriate action be taken against them.
Post-Mortem Pending Amid Family’s Demand for Justice
The body of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has been kept in the mortuary since his death. Despite the passage of five days, the post-mortem has not yet been conducted. The family, led by Amneet P. Kumar, has refused to permit the last rites until they receive assurance of justice and the inclusion of the accused officers named in the suicide note in the investigation.
On Saturday, the body was brought to PGI for a post-mortem; however, the family’s cooperation remains conditional on a thorough probe into the allegations made by the deceased.
Allegations Against Senior Officers in Suicide Note
In an eight-page suicide note, Puran Kumar alleged mental harassment and humiliation by several senior officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya.
Amneet P. Kumar has specifically demanded action against SP Narendra Bijarnia, whom she holds responsible for the mental harassment her husband endured.
IAS Association Appeals for Transparent and Sensitive Probe
The Haryana IAS Association has expressed strong support for Amneet P. Kumar’s demands. The association has urged the Haryana government and Chandigarh administration to handle the case with utmost seriousness, transparency, and sensitivity.
In a resolution, the IAS Association called for a thorough investigation of the complaints raised by Amneet P. Kumar in her memoranda sent to the Chief Minister of Haryana on October 9 and to Sector 11 Police Station, Chandigarh on October 8. The association emphasized the need for an impartial and unbiased inquiry into all allegations.
SIT Formed, But Family Awaits Complete FIR and Justice
The Haryana government has constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding IPS officer Puran Kumar’s death. The SIT has already visited the deceased officer’s residence as part of its investigation.
Despite these steps, the family has not given consent for the post-mortem, citing that the FIR filed so far does not reflect the full scope of allegations. Amneet P. Kumar insists that the FIR be amended to include all officers named in the suicide note as suspects.
