New Delhi: Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has commenced steel cutting for the second 60 Ton Bollard Pull (BP) tug being built for the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), marking a significant milestone in the project’s execution. The 32-metre tug is designed for high manoeuvrability and superior escort performance, supporting the government’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
Modernising VPA Fleet for Rising Maritime Traffic
The new tug, along with its sister vessel, is expected to strengthen VPA’s operational capabilities by improving vessel turnaround time, supporting rising traffic, and enhancing emergency response preparedness. These advanced tugs are tailored to meet the evolving needs of Visakhapatnam Port, which is among India’s busiest maritime hubs.
HSL Leadership Highlights Project Significance
HSL’s Chairman & Managing Director, Capt. G. Venkateswarlu, IN (Retd), expressed pride in the collaboration with VPA, noting that steel cutting represents the tangible start of the vessel’s construction. He emphasised that HSL is steadily executing major national programmes, including complex naval projects such as Fleet Support Ships.

Aparanji, in her address, congratulated HSL and highlighted the critical importance of technological upgradation, precision, and integrity in shipbuilding. She also stressed the need to protect Visakhapatnam’s unique marine ecosystem and called for coordinated efforts to maintain the port’s maritime reputation.
