Strategic agreement aims to commercialize India’s indigenous naphtha-to-olefins technology on a global scale
Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai/New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s chemical innovation capabilities, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) has partnered with Lummus Technology, USA, to globally commercialize its patented HP-NTO (Naphtha to Olefins) technology. The agreement was signed at HPCL’s Corporate Office in Mumbai, in the presence of senior leadership from both organizations.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the global energy and petrochemical sectors by positioning indigenously developed Indian technology on the international stage.

Breakthrough in Olefin Production: HP-NTO

Developed by HPCL’s in-house R&D teams, the HP-NTO process enables the conversion of naphtha into high-value olefins, such as ethylene and propylene, using a lower-temperature and more energy-efficient method compared to conventional naphtha crackers.

This advancement offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional olefin production and enhances India’s reputation for innovation in the downstream energy and petrochemical space.

A Strategic Global Licensing Partnership

Lummus Technology, a world leader in process technologies and licensing, brings decades of global expertise to the table. By collaborating with Lummus, HPCL is poised to license its breakthrough technology across global markets, creating new revenue streams while contributing to the development of low-carbon petrochemical processes.

“This agreement is a proud moment for Indian innovation. It showcases our ability to develop and now export world-class technologies,” said an HPCL spokesperson present at the signing ceremony.

Empowering Indian R&D on a Global Platform

The partnership is also a testament to the strength of India’s public-sector research and development. HPCL’s success with HP-NTO underscores how Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives are creating technology-driven solutions that can compete globally.

By leveraging the global reach of Lummus and the innovation capabilities of HPCL, the HP-NTO process is set to become a game-changer in clean and efficient petrochemical manufacturing.
