Bengaluru: In a key administrative reshuffle, the Karnataka government has appointed J Ravishankar, a 2001-batch IAS officer, as the new Managing Director (MD) of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). He replaces M Maheshwar Rao, who was handling the post as additional charge since April after being appointed BBMP Chief Commissioner.
This change in leadership comes at a critical juncture for Namma Metro, as it prepares to roll out major infrastructure projects including the long-awaited Yellow Line, Pink and Blue Line extensions, and fresh tenders for the Orange Line.
From Dentist to Metro Chief
Ravishankar, who turns 55 on August 5, holds a degree in dental surgery and brings extensive administrative experience to the role. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Secretary in the Agriculture Department. His past roles include:
- Excise Commissioner
- Secretary in Housing, Planning, Programme Monitoring and Statistics, and Municipal Administration Departments
- Deputy Commissioner in the districts of Raichur, Mandya, Kolar, and Belagavi
A New Phase for Namma Metro
Ravishankar takes charge of BMRCL at a time when the city’s metro network is undergoing its most ambitious expansion yet-
- The Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra), repeatedly delayed, is now targeted to open in August 2025
- Construction of the Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara–Nagawara) and Blue Line (Central Silk Board–KR Puram) needs to be expedited
- Tenders for the Orange Line (Hebbal to Sarjapur) are expected to be floated soon
These projects are critical to improving connectivity across Bengaluru and easing the city’s chronic traffic congestion.
Maheshwar Rao’s Brief but Impactful Tenure
Outgoing MD M Maheshwar Rao held the post for around 18 months. During his tenure–
- The 3.14 km Green Line extension to Madavara was inaugurated
- Supply issues for Yellow Line trains were streamlined
- He initiated efforts to boost non-fare revenue for the Metro
- Oversaw BMRCL’s first fare hike in eight years
Rao’s leadership was credited with bringing a sharper focus to project timelines and revenue diversification.
