In a significant development, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India issued a landmark judgment on January 3rd, addressing the matter of personal appearances of officials in court proceedings. The judgement, delivered in the case of Civil Appeals No 23-24 of 2023 (State of Uttar Pradesh & Ors. Vs Association of Retired Supreme Court and High Court Judges at Allahabad & Ors.), has been hailed by the Indian Civil & Administrative Services Officers’ Association.
The Association, representing all lAS officers, expressed its deep appreciation for the Supreme Court’s decision. The three-judge bench, comprising Honorable Chief Justice Dr. D. Y. Chandrachud, Honorable Justice Shri J. B. Pardiwala, and Honorable Justice Manoj Misra, delivered a comprehensive and clear ruling that not only clarified the law on personal appearance of officials in court proceedings but also established a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the same.
The IAS Association, in a press release, commended the erudite and equitable nature of the judgment. It emphasized that the decision reflects the fairness and majesty of India’s judicial system, instilling faith and trust in every citizen. The Association called upon all lAS officers to redouble their commitment to the diligent and expedited implementation of court orders, with due regard for lawful remedies and adherence to government procedures.
