New Delhi: The Government of Nagaland has appointed Sentiyanger Imchen, a 1991 batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Secretary of Nagaland, effective August 1, 2025. This decision comes a day ahead of the superannuation of incumbent Chief Secretary Dr. Jan-E-Alam, who officially retires on July 31, 2025.
A formal notification to this effect was issued by the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (DP&AR), Nagaland, confirming the appointment.
Veteran Bureaucrat with Decades of Administrative Experience
IAS Imchen is a seasoned officer of the Nagaland cadre and is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary and Finance Commissioner in the state government. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in shaping state-level economic and financial policy.
He is expected to hold the position of Chief Secretary until his own retirement in January 2027, as per the State Civil List (as on April 1, 2024).
Instrumental in MSME Support Reforms
In a recent key development, Imchen spearheaded the signing of a master agreement with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). This collaboration aims to strengthen MSME clusters across Nagaland, boost economic self-reliance, and foster entrepreneurship—critical for a region with emerging industrial potential.
Succession Following a Distinguished Tenure by Dr. J Alam
Dr. J Alam, who took charge as Chief Secretary on February 12, 2021, following the unfortunate demise of Temjen Toy, served the state through a period of significant administrative and development efforts. His tenure was marked by governance reforms and pandemic recovery measures.
As Imchen steps into the top bureaucratic role, expectations are high for continued institutional strengthening and sustained economic growth in the state.
