Bhubaneswar: Senior IAS Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, an Odisha cadre officer of 2005 batch, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Cooperation, Government of Odisha, has successfully completed the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon held in Goa on November 8 — marking his second Ironman finish.
The triathlon, one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges, tested participants with a 1.9 km open-water swim, a 90 km cycling leg, and a 21.1 km run along Goa’s scenic yet humid coastline.
A Gruelling Challenge Conquered with Discipline
The IRONMAN 70.3 Goa event drew over 1,500 athletes from 25+ countries, including elite professionals and first-time triathletes.
For Patil, who had earlier completed the same challenge once before, this edition was not just a repeat attempt but an improvement. He recorded a better overall timing, credited to a rigorous training schedule, scientific pacing, and enhanced endurance.
Speaking after the event, he expressed gratitude to his family, colleagues, and Odisha’s fitness community for their support. “Endurance sports teach patience, focus, and consistency — qualities that equally define good public service,” he said.

Odisha’s Ironman Bureaucrat: From Rural Maharashtra to Civil Services Glory
Born into a humble farming family in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, Rajesh Patil’s journey to the IAS is one of extraordinary grit and perseverance.
From selling bread and vegetables as a child to support his family, to earning a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Statistics from Pune University, and finally cracking the UPSC Civil Services Exam in 2005, his life mirrors his philosophy — no obstacle is insurmountable with discipline and belief.
As an officer, Patil has served in key districts such as Athgarh, Koraput, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj, where his empathetic and people-first approach earned him deep respect.
Administrator, Innovator, and Award-Winning Officer
- During his administrative career, Patil has been known for innovation and compassion.
- Introduced a “Ready to Eat” initiative for preschool children during the 2008 Mahanadi floods.
- Led tribal welfare and disability rehabilitation programmes in Mayurbhanj.
- Implemented solar-based drinking water projects that gained national recognition.
His commitment earned him the President’s Award (2014) and the Prime Minister’s Award (2015) for excellence in public administration, particularly under MGNREGA implementation.
The Writer Within: “Maa, I’ve Become a Collector!” Inspires a Generation
Beyond bureaucracy and endurance sports, Patil is also an author and motivational figure.
His autobiography — “Tai, Mi Collector Vhayanu” (Marathi), later translated into Hindi, Odia, and English as “Maa, I’ve Become a Collector!” — chronicles his journey from rural hardship to administrative success.
The English edition was recently launched in Bhubaneswar, where leaders such as Dr. Achyuta Samanta (Founder, KIIT & KISS) and former Chief Secretary S. B. Mishra praised it as a “source of inspiration for thousands of students and aspirants.”
Odisha’s Fitness & Public Service Inspiration
For many, Rajesh Patil symbolizes the new-age Indian bureaucrat — balancing demanding public duties with fitness, mental health, and social empathy.
In the same IRONMAN 70.3 event, Manoj Prusty from the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club (BCAC) completed his maiden Ironman in 7:28:53, with impressive splits across all three segments.
Patil’s dual identity — as an athlete and administrator — continues to inspire civil servants and citizens alike to lead fit, focused, and purpose-driven lives.
