Gwalior, MP: The 2011 batch IAS officer Ruchika Chauhan, currently serving as the District Magistrate of Gwalior, is in the spotlight after a video of her reprimanding the husbands of elected female councilors during an official meeting went viral. Her firm stance against the practice of male family members representing elected women has been widely appreciated across social media and administrative circles.
The Incident That Went Viral
The viral video, shot at a recent municipal meeting in Gwalior’s Bal Bhavan, shows DM Ruchika Chauhan addressing a group of women councilors — or rather, their husbands, who had occupied the seats meant for their elected wives.
Observing the clear case of proxy attendance, Chauhan took immediate action, asking the husbands to vacate the official seats and move to the audience gallery. “Women are empowered now, let them do their own work,” she said firmly, stressing that reservations for women are meant to ensure their participation — not their substitution by male relatives.
This act of administrative firmness came on the first day of Navratri, symbolically aligning with the celebration of feminine strength. The moment earned her accolades for promoting women’s agency in local governance.
