Raipur: In a significant administrative development, the Chhattisgarh government has assigned additional key responsibilities to the 2016 abtch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Mayank Agrawal, reflecting the state’s focus on strengthening its climate governance and digital infrastructure.
According to an official order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD), Mayank Agarwal has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer (COO), Directorate of Forest and Climate Change, Raipur.
Additionally, he has been entrusted with the additional charge of COO of CHiPS (Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society) – a nodal agency driving the state’s e-governance and IT initiatives.
The order, signed by Deputy Secretary Anshika Pandey, has been issued in the name of the Governor, with instructions for immediate assumption of duties. The development has been formally communicated to all relevant departments and administrative offices.
Agrawal to Oversee Two Crucial Sectors: Forests and Infotech
An officer of the 2016 batch, Mr Agrawal is currently serving under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) at the Centre. Known for his technical expertise and administrative acumen, Agrawal’s return to Chhattisgarh in this dual capacity is seen as a strategic move to infuse experience into two critical sectors – environment and technology.
In addition to his appointment as COO of the Forest Directorate, Mr Agrawal has also been designated Joint Secretary in the Department of Good Governance, showcasing the government’s trust in his cross-functional capabilities.
Why This Matters
The Forest and Climate Change Department is one of the most sensitive wings of the state administration, especially in an ecologically rich state like Chhattisgarh. Coupled with the growing push for climate adaptation, sustainable development, and digital transformation, this dual assignment reflects the government’s intent to streamline operations and ensure effective leadership.
CHiPS, under the Department of Information Technology, is the driving force behind digital services, smart governance, and technology adoption in the state. Having a forest officer with central experience in climate and environment at the helm signifies an integrated approach to governance.
Official Confirmation
The GAD order highlights the urgency and significance of the appointment, stating that Mr Agrawal is to take charge with immediate effect. The administrative reshuffle aligns with the state’s broader strategy to leverage central expertise for grassroots execution in key departments.
