New Delhi: The Government of India has empanelled two Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers to hold positions of Joint Secretary or equivalent at the Centre. The officers selected for these prestigious roles are Suvasish Das (2005 batch, Assam-Meghalaya cadre) and Dr. V S Senthil Kumar (2005 batch, AGMUT cadre).

Suvasish Das: A Profile of Experience and Leadership

Professional Background

Born on Dec 2, 1977, Mr Das, an IFS officer of the 2005 Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has been a distinguished member of the service since his entry on August 8, 2005, after securing the 17th rank in the 2004 UPSC IFS Examination.

Education

He holds a Master of Science degree from Delhi University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Forest Management from the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun, equipping him with both technical and managerial expertise in forestry administration.

Career Milestones

During his tenure in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Das has held key positions, including

  • Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Sonitpur East Division
  • Conservator of Forests (Development, RE&WP)

On the corporate side, he served as a Director on the Board of Hemisphere Properties India Limited (HPIL), a Government of India enterprise, until January 20, 2025, and was recently recommended for the post of Director in the Ministry of Railways (late 2024).

Dr. V S Senthil Kumar is an IFS officer of the 2005 AGMUT cadre, originally allotted to Jammu & Kashmir before the merger into AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories). He hails from Tamil Nadu and has made significant contributions in forestry education and research.

He holds a Doctorate (PhD) and specializes in Bio-economy, Bio-informatics, and Green Business. His formal training in forestry was completed at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun.

Dr. Senthil Kumar currently serves as a Lecturer at the Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS), Dehradun, where he is actively involved in training and capacity building of forest service officers. His tenure in this role began on July 14, 2021, and is set to continue until July 13, 2025.

In addition to teaching, he frequently delivers lectures on bio-economy and green business, contributing to knowledge dissemination in the forestry sector and policy-relevant research.
