India-Thailand Relations
India-Thailand relations reached a significant milestone in April 2025 when bilateral ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangkok for the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. This elevation reflects a deeper alignment between India’s “Act East” policy and Thailand’s “Act West” policy, focusing on security, digital technology, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific. Bilateral trade has shown resilience, reaching approximately $15 billion to $19 billion by late 2024, with both nations actively reviewing the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) to address persistent trade imbalances by the end of 2025. Connectivity remains a priority, highlighted by efforts to expedite the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the 2024 implementation of reciprocal visa-free entry policies, which propelled Indians to become one of the largest tourist groups in Thailand. Cultural ties were further reinforced in 2024 through the high-profile public exposition of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha in Thailand, which drew over 4 million devotees.
Strategic Importance of Thailand Posting
Mr Agrawal’s appointment as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand comes at a time when India continues to strengthen its engagement under its Act East Policy and deepen cooperation with Southeast Asian partners.
Thailand occupies a crucial position in India’s diplomatic and strategic calculus, particularly in areas such as maritime security, trade, connectivity, tourism, and cultural exchanges. With his extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy, Indian Ocean affairs, and regional engagement, Agrawal is expected to further consolidate India–Thailand bilateral relations.
