New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Rohit Rathish (IFS: 2006) as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Seychelles, according to an official announcement made on September 3, 2025.
Mr Rathish is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and is expected to assume his new diplomatic assignment shortly.
Key Posting in Strategic Indian Ocean Region
Seychelles, a key maritime partner for India in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), holds strategic importance due to its proximity to major sea lanes and its longstanding bilateral cooperation with India in defence, security, and development. The appointment of a senior IFS officer like Rathish signals India’s commitment to strengthening this critical partnership.
Distinguished Career in Indian Foreign Service
IFS Rathish joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2006, securing an impressive 3rd rank in the Civil Services Examination out of 433 successful candidates. Over the past 15+ years, he has held several high-responsibility roles in India’s diplomatic and foreign policy ecosystem.
His previous assignments include–
- Deputy Consul at the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco
- Deputy Chief Protocol Officer, MEA
- Assistant Secretary, MEA
- Director, Summits Division, MEA
- Joint Secretary, MEA
Instrumental Role in G20 India Summit
IFS Rathish was a key behind-the-scenes figure during the G20 Summit hosted by India in 2023, where he played a crucial role in logistics coordination and protocol management, ensuring smooth operations during one of India’s most significant global diplomatic events in recent history.
Champion of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure Abroad
As part of his recent responsibilities at the MEA, IFS Rathish has actively advocated for the global adoption of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) framework, particularly across the Global South. His diplomatic efforts have contributed to India’s rising influence in the digital and development sectors globally.
A Promising Diplomat with a Low Public Profile
Though not widely known among the general public, IFS Rathish is regarded within the diplomatic community as “very intelligent” and one of the most promising diplomats of his generation. His steady rise within the MEA highlights both his capability and the trust placed in him by the government.
Looking Ahead
As India deepens its engagement with island nations in the Indo-Pacific, Rathish’s appointment as High Commissioner to Seychelles is expected to bolster India’s maritime diplomacy, enhance defence cooperation, and support initiatives in development, education, and people-to-people ties.
