The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the lateral shift of Anuj Chandak, a 2012-batch officer of the Indian Information Service (IIS), to the post of Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). His appointment falls under the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS) on a lateral shift basis.
Mr Chandak is currently serving as Joint Director in the Election Commission of India, holding a Junior Administrative Grade (Ordinary Grade) position. His new role as Deputy Secretary in MoEF&CC will be effective from the date of assumption of charge, with a tenure up to April 2, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. This move constitutes a combined tenure of six years at the Deputy Secretary level across CSS and Non-CSS postings.

An alumnus of IIT-BHU, Anuj Chandak holds a B.Tech degree and brings with him a distinctive blend of technical expertise and communication acumen. He began his career as an Executive Engineer at BHEL before joining the Indian Information Service, where he has contributed in various roles that demand strong public communication and policy skills.
He has also completed a nine-month professional training program at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) – a flagship course aimed at grooming top-tier media managers, public communicators, PR professionals, and media technology experts.
This diverse background positions him uniquely for strategic roles involving environmental communication, policy formulation, and public engagement.
Mr Chandak’s lateral shift to the Ministry of Environment is expected to enhance the ministry’s communication strategy on pressing environmental issues such as climate change, sustainability, and forest conservation. His appointment reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging multidisciplinary talent to strengthen governance and improve public outreach.
