New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, one of India’s premier institutions, has highlighted the far-reaching impact of its alumni across governance, academia, industry, and entrepreneurship with the release of its inaugural Alumni Impact Report. The report was unveiled during the institute’s 68th Foundation Day celebrations, marking more than 65 years of IIT Delhi’s legacy since its inception.
According to the report, over 650 IIT Delhi alumni currently serve in public institutions, underlining the institute’s significant contribution to India’s administrative, regulatory, and scientific ecosystem.
Strong Presence in Civil Services and Public Sector Leadership
The report reveals a substantial representation of IIT Delhi graduates in India’s civil services and public sector undertakings. Among the alumni serving in public institutions:
- More than 270 are IAS officers
- Over 100 officers serve across the IPS, IRS, and IFS
- Around 250 alumni hold leadership roles in PSUs, regulatory bodies, and major scientific missions
In addition, IIT Delhi’s Naval Construction Wing has played a vital role in strengthening India’s defence capabilities by training over 700 officers for the Indian Navy, further extending the institute’s national impact.
Alumni Shaping Global and Indian Academia
The report also reflects IIT Delhi’s strong academic influence globally. Alumni of the institute are contributing to higher education and research at leading universities worldwide:
- Over 50 alumni serve as faculty in QS Top 100 Universities
- More than 300 alumni are faculty members across various IITs in India
This academic footprint underscores IIT Delhi’s role in nurturing educators and researchers who continue to advance global knowledge and innovation.
Thousands in Leadership Roles Across Key Industries
Beyond public service and academia, IIT Delhi alumni have established a strong presence in the corporate and industrial sectors. The report notes that around 10,000 alumni currently hold leadership positions in areas such as:
- Banking and Finance
- Manufacturing
- Engineering and Technology
Notably, 70 percent of these leaders are based in India, contributing directly to the country’s economic growth and industrial advancement. Additionally, over 1,000 alumni serve on the boards of major and diverse corporate entities, influencing strategic decision-making across industries.
Entrepreneurial Legacy and Startup Success
Entrepreneurship emerges as a defining strength of IIT Delhi’s alumni network. The report states that more than 2,500 founders and co-founders have emerged from the institute, playing a pivotal role in shaping India’s modern digital economy.
IIT Delhi alumni-led ventures have collectively generated approximately 4.8 lakh direct jobs, highlighting their contribution to employment generation and innovation.

- Deepinder Goyal, founder of Eternal, which includes platforms Zomato and Blinkit
- Harsh Jain, Co-founder and COO of Groww
- Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal, founders of Meesho
- Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart
- Ashutosh Garg, founder of Eightfold.ai and Bloomreach
- Jyoti Bansal, founder of AppDynamics
- Rishbh Goel, leading digital debt recovery through Credgenics
The report also highlights global technology leaders and venture capitalists from IIT Delhi, including Vinod Khosla, Co-founder of Sun Microsystems; Navin Chaddha, Managing Director at Mayfield Fund; and Pavan Jain, Founder of Samsara, all of whom are shaping the international technology and investment landscape.
Alumni Impact Report Released by Eminent Leaders
The Alumni Impact Report was released by Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu, an IIT Delhi alumnus and Principal Fellow and Corporate Vice President at Micron Technology, along with Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi. The release took place during a foundation day function organised by the institute, bringing together alumni, faculty, and stakeholders to celebrate IIT Delhi’s enduring legacy.
Endowment Fund Strengthens Research and Infrastructure
The report also sheds light on the success of the IIT Delhi Endowment Fund, which has been built through alumni contributions. The fund enables the institute to independently invest in cutting-edge research and infrastructure development.
So far, the endowment has received Rs 477 crore in pledges, out of which Rs 338 crore has already been realised, significantly enhancing the institute’s ability to support long-term academic and research initiatives.
Class of 2000 Pledges Rs 70 Crore for Silver Jubilee Reunion
In a major philanthropic gesture, the IIT Delhi Class of 2000 has pledged over Rs 70 crore ahead of its Silver Jubilee Reunion scheduled for December 2025. These contributions are aimed at supporting several critical initiatives, including:
- More than 75 Academic Chairs and 115 Awards for excellence
- Over 137 Scholarships and International Travel Grants for deserving students
Development of key infrastructure projects such as the Mittal Sports Complex, the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence, and the CERCA Centre for Climate Research
Director Highlights Alumni as Pillars of National Progress
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, emphasised the transformative role of the institute’s alumni over the decades. He stated that the report demonstrates how IIT Delhi graduates have evolved into global leaders, innovative entrepreneurs, and committed public servants, making substantial economic and social contributions worldwide.
“From 150 alumni in 1966 to 65,000 today, our graduates remain the heartbeat of India’s technological and social progress,” Prof. Banerjee said, underscoring the enduring influence of IIT Delhi’s alumni community.
