Mumbai: In a landmark step for India’s innovation ecosystem, IIT-Bombay has launched the nation’s first-ever ₹250 crore deep tech-focused venture capital fund, marking a major shift in how early-stage scientific and engineering innovations will be nurtured and commercialised.

Named the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, the initiative is anchored by the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), IIT-Bombay, and is the first deep tech fund to be managed directly by an academic institution in India.

This breakthrough aligns with IIT-Bombay’s newly unveiled Strategy Plan 2026–2030, positioning the institute as a national leader in science-driven entrepreneurship, high-impact innovation, and cutting-edge research translation.

Background of IIT Bombay Y-Point Venture Capital Fund

Deep tech — innovations derived from scientific breakthroughs in AI, advanced materials, biotechnology, quantum technologies, and defence — has long been identified as a strategic domain for national growth and global competitiveness.

Despite India’s growth as a global startup hub, early-stage deep tech ventures struggled to secure specialised funding, due to the high cost of R&D, long gestation periods, and higher technological risks.

IIT-Bombay’s announcement attempts to bridge this gap by combining:

  • Academic research excellence
  • Structured venture funding
  • Incubation and mentorship ecosystems

This synergy is expected to accelerate the transition of lab discoveries into market-ready products with global potential.

Launch of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund

The ₹250 crore fund was launched after receiving approval from IIT-Bombay’s Board of Governors under the chairmanship of Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO Chairman.

Key Highlights of the Fund

  • India’s first deep tech VC fund led by a premier academic institution
  • Focus on high-impact scientific sectors critical for national progression
  • Direct integration with IIT-Bombay’s incubation ecosystem (SINE)
  • Strong mentorship from world-class faculty and industry leaders
  • Commercialisation pathway for research-generated intellectual property (IP)

Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasised the fund’s objective to strengthen India’s global competitiveness by harnessing the country’s scientific talent and providing them with targeted financial support.

Strategic Sectors Targeted by the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund

The fund is designed to advance India’s capabilities in domains essential for future-ready industries and national security.

1. Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing: Support for AI, ML, Cloud, and HPC-based innovations that address challenges in enterprise, defence, and automation.

2. Advanced Manufacturing and Materials: Focus on robotics, 3D printing, new-age materials, and sustainable industrial technologies.

3. Defence and Aerospace Technologies: Promoting indigenous solutions in sensors, space systems, UAVs, cyber defence, and high-end avionics.

4. CleanTech and Climate Solutions: Hydrogen technologies, carbon capture, renewable storage systems, and environmental sustainability.

5. Life Sciences and Healthcare Technologies: Diagnostics, bioengineering, medical devices, and next-gen therapeutics.

By investing in these priority sectors, IIT-Bombay aims to foster a pipeline of high-impact startups poised to shape India’s scientific and industrial future.

IIT-Bombay’s Strategy Plan 2026–2030: Three Foundational Pillars

Along with the fund’s launch, IIT-Bombay unveiled its forward-looking 2026–2030 Strategy Plan, which outlines three strategic pillars to guide the institute’s innovation and growth initiatives.

Pillar 1: Learning-Centric Education

The institute aims to reshape higher education by:

  • Strengthening competency-based curriculum
  • Integrating new-age digital and hybrid learning models
  • Encouraging industry-academia collaboration
  • Offering flexible programmes tailored to students’ evolving career goals

This approach intends to produce graduates who are not only academically strong but also industry-ready innovators.

Pillar 2: Research for Impact

The strategy emphasises:

  • Interdisciplinary problem-solving hubs
  • Focus on national missions and real-world challenges
  • Development of globally competitive research groups
  • Support for IP creation and technology transfer

By aligning research with societal needs, IIT-Bombay seeks to create innovations that offer large-scale public benefit.

Pillar 3: Digital Growth and Global Reach

To democratise access to premium education, IIT-Bombay plans to:

  • Expand its online degree and certification programmes
  • Build a global digital-first learning ecosystem
  • Strengthen international partnerships
  • Engage learners across continents

This digital extension aims to make IIT-Bombay’s expertise available to a worldwide audience.

Y-Point Venture Capital Fund: A Significant Step Toward India’s Innovation Future

The introduction of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund signifies more than just financial support — it represents a national commitment to accelerating deep tech innovation, promoting indigenous technologies, and nurturing startups with the potential for global impact.

By integrating:

  • Cutting-edge research
  • Strong venture capital support
  • A powerful incubation ecosystem

IIT-Bombay is positioning itself as a driving force in shaping India’s future technology landscape.

This initiative not only strengthens India’s scientific capabilities but also sets a foundation for self-reliant innovation, commercial success, and global leadership in deep technology.
