Mumbai: In a landmark step for India’s innovation ecosystem, IIT-Bombay has launched the nation’s first-ever ₹250 crore deep tech-focused venture capital fund, marking a major shift in how early-stage scientific and engineering innovations will be nurtured and commercialised.
Named the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, the initiative is anchored by the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), IIT-Bombay, and is the first deep tech fund to be managed directly by an academic institution in India.
This breakthrough aligns with IIT-Bombay’s newly unveiled Strategy Plan 2026–2030, positioning the institute as a national leader in science-driven entrepreneurship, high-impact innovation, and cutting-edge research translation.
Background of IIT Bombay Y-Point Venture Capital Fund
Deep tech — innovations derived from scientific breakthroughs in AI, advanced materials, biotechnology, quantum technologies, and defence — has long been identified as a strategic domain for national growth and global competitiveness.

Despite India’s growth as a global startup hub, early-stage deep tech ventures struggled to secure specialised funding, due to the high cost of R&D, long gestation periods, and higher technological risks.
IIT-Bombay’s announcement attempts to bridge this gap by combining:
- Academic research excellence
- Structured venture funding
- Incubation and mentorship ecosystems
This synergy is expected to accelerate the transition of lab discoveries into market-ready products with global potential.
Launch of the Y-Point Venture Capital Fund
The ₹250 crore fund was launched after receiving approval from IIT-Bombay’s Board of Governors under the chairmanship of Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, former ISRO Chairman.
Key Highlights of the Fund
- India’s first deep tech VC fund led by a premier academic institution
- Focus on high-impact scientific sectors critical for national progression
- Direct integration with IIT-Bombay’s incubation ecosystem (SINE)
- Strong mentorship from world-class faculty and industry leaders
- Commercialisation pathway for research-generated intellectual property (IP)
Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasised the fund’s objective to strengthen India’s global competitiveness by harnessing the country’s scientific talent and providing them with targeted financial support.
