New Delhi: India has emerged as a global leader in green hydrogen offtake commitments, with firm and signed agreements reaching 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026. These commitments account for approximately 11% of the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s target and reflect India’s growing role in the global clean energy market.
In 2026 alone, Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements for the supply of more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent. Since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in 2023, a total of 23 offtake contracts covering approximately 5.5 lakh MTPA have been signed, with more than 70% of the committed volumes earmarked for exports.
The agreements are expected to attract investments exceeding ₹90,000 crore (approximately USD 9.5 billion), strengthening India’s position in the emerging global market for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
India Strengthens Its Position in the Global Green Hydrogen Market
Indian companies are increasingly establishing strategic partnerships with international buyers across major markets, including Japan, Germany, South Korea and Sri Lanka. Indian suppliers are offering competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol, helping strengthen the country’s position in international clean fuel markets.
Green hydrogen derivatives are gaining importance across several industries as countries and companies seek to reduce carbon emissions. Key applications include:
- Shipping sector: Green ammonia and green methanol are emerging as alternative low-carbon fuels for the global shipping industry.
- Thermal power generation: Green ammonia is being considered for co-firing in thermal power plants to reduce carbon emissions.
- Fertiliser production: Green hydrogen and its derivatives are being adopted to support the production of lower-carbon fertilisers.
- Oil refining: Green hydrogen is increasingly being used as a potential pathway to reduce emissions from refinery operations.
These developments are expected to support industrial decarbonisation while creating new export opportunities for Indian producers.
National Green Hydrogen Mission Targets 5 Million Tonnes of Annual Production
The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved by the Union Cabinet with an initial financial outlay of ₹19,744 crore up to 2029-30. The Mission aims to establish India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen.
By 2030, the Mission targets annual green hydrogen production of at least 5 million metric tonnes (MMTPA).
Its expected outcomes include:
- Addition of 125 GW of renewable energy capacity.
- More than ₹8 lakh crore in total investments.
- Creation of over 6 lakh full-time jobs.
- Avoidance of approximately 50 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The growing number of domestic and international offtake agreements is expected to support the development of production facilities, renewable energy infrastructure and associated supply chains required to achieve these targets.
Major Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Export Agreements
Indian companies have signed several significant agreements with international buyers for the supply of green ammonia, green methanol and other renewable fuels.
Key agreements and developments include:
- ACME Group and IHI, Japan: ACME Group has signed an offtake agreement to supply 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia to Japan’s IHI.
- ACME Group and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Japan: The company has also signed an agreement to supply 1,00,000 MTPA of green methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC).
- L&T and ITOCHU: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Japan’s ITOCHU have formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the supply of 3,00,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia. Deliveries are expected to begin in December 2029.
- Reliance Industries and Samsung C&T Corporation: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into a long-term supply and purchase agreement with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation valued at more than USD 3 billion. Deliveries are expected to commence by 2028, making it one of the largest green ammonia offtake contracts globally.
- Agastya and SAR, Sri Lanka: Agastya is in the process of securing an offtake arrangement for the supply of 2,50,000 MTPA of green methanol to SAR in Sri Lanka.
- AM Green and Germany’s H2Global programme: AM Green has been selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction conducted by HINT.CO GmbH. Under the agreement, Hintco will purchase renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) ammonia from AM Green for a minimum value of EUR 585 million over 10 years. The first deliveries to Germany are expected in 2029.
- AM Green and Uniper, Germany: AM Green has signed a firm offtake agreement with German energy company Uniper for the supply of 2,50,000 MTPA of green ammonia.
- AM Green and JERA, Japan: The company has signed a binding heads of agreement with Japanese power producer JERA for the long-term supply of 70,000 MTPA of green ammonia.
- Jouno Joules and Select Energy GmbH: Jouno Joules has signed an offtake agreement with Select Energy GmbH for 600 tonnes per day (TPD) of green ammonia, equivalent to approximately 2,19,000 MTPA.
These partnerships demonstrate the growing international demand for Indian-produced green fuels and the potential for India to become a major supplier to global energy and industrial markets.
Domestic Demand for Green Hydrogen Gains Momentum
Alongside export commitments, government-backed initiatives are helping establish a domestic market for green hydrogen and green ammonia. The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission is supporting the development of production capacity and demand across key industrial sectors.
Green Ammonia Supply Agreements with Fertiliser Units
Under the SIGHT Programme, agreements have been signed for the production and supply of 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser units located across the country.
The initiative is expected to support the adoption of low-carbon alternatives in the fertiliser industry and help reduce dependence on conventional, emission-intensive production processes.
Green Hydrogen Projects for Oil Refineries
Under the same programme, projects have been awarded for the production and supply of 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to refineries operated by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
The adoption of green hydrogen in refinery operations is expected to support efforts to lower industrial emissions and encourage the use of cleaner energy sources in the oil and gas sector.
Green Hydrogen Commitments Support India’s Clean Energy Ambitions
India’s green hydrogen offtake commitments of more than 5.5 lakh MTPA mark an important development in the country’s clean energy transition. With 23 contracts signed since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and 18 new agreements concluded in 2026, the sector is gaining momentum in both export-oriented and domestic markets.
The expected investment of more than ₹90,000 crore, alongside government-backed demand from fertiliser units and oil refineries, could accelerate the development of green hydrogen production facilities and related infrastructure.
As global demand for low-carbon fuels continues to expand, India’s competitive production capabilities, international partnerships and policy support are expected to play a key role in advancing its ambition to become a leading global hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
