In early 2026, Israel Weapon Industries confirmed that it will deliver the first batch of 40,000 light machine guns to the Indian Defence Forces.
The agreement, originally signed in 2024, has passed all required trials and government checks. The company has now received its production licence, clearing the way for manufacturing and scheduled deployment.
IWI aims to complete deliveries under a five-year contract. However, CEO Mr. Shuki Schwartz stated that accelerated timelines may be possible depending on production flow and operational requirements.
Next-Generation Carbines Deal Nearing Completion
The company is also close to finalising a major deal to supply nearly 1,70,000 next-generation carbines to India. This development marks another significant step in the growing collaboration between IWI and India’s Ministry of Home Affairs.
Over the years, both sides have worked together on multiple projects involving pistols, rifles, and machine guns. Officials expect procurement volumes to expand sharply as India strengthens its security architecture.
CQB Carbine Programme Moves Ahead
Alongside the LMG contract, IWI is actively participating in India’s Close Quarters Battle carbine procurement programme.
This project is now at the pre-signing stage and is expected to be concluded either by the end of this year or early next year.
Bharat Forge is the main bidder, responsible for 60 percent of the programme. IWI plans to supply the remaining 40 percent through PLR Systems, its joint venture under the Adani Group.
This approach strengthens domestic manufacturing participation and supports government procurement norms.
India May Soon Get Arbel, an AI-Enabled Weapon System
IWI is also holding discussions with Indian agencies to integrate its Arbel technology into local production lines.
Arbel is a smart, computerised weapon system that uses advanced algorithms to determine when a soldier is perfectly aligned with a target, enabling highly precise strikes.
The system is proposed to be co-produced in India through PLR Systems. If approved, it will mark a significant leap for India’s defence technology ecosystem.
Longstanding Defence Cooperation Set to Expand
Mr. Schwartz noted that IWI has maintained consistent engagement with India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and several other agencies for many years.
Contracts have historically included small batches of pistols, rifles, and light machine guns. Annual supply volumes are now expected to grow into the tens of thousands as India’s internal and external security needs rise.
He further emphasised IWI’s commitment to the Make in India initiative. The partnership with the Adani Group through PLR Systems is expected to help scale production and integrate high-end technologies for local deployment.
Israel’s Resilient Supply Chain Offers Strategic Advantage
Commenting on supply restrictions imposed by certain European nations on defence equipment, Mr. Schwartz highlighted that Israel’s robust supply chain enables it to meet partner requirements without external dependencies.
He stressed that IWI has created a durable global supply framework capable of supporting defence forces worldwide.
A Major Step Forward for India’s Defence Preparedness
These developments signal the strengthening of India–Israel defence cooperation.
The partnership will advance India’s indigenisation goals, reinforce domestic manufacturing capabilities, and support long-term national security through trusted technology integration.
