New Delhi/Dras/Punjab: The Indian Army conducted two major humanitarian assistance operations on August 31, 2025, showcasing its commitment to saving lives in both high-altitude and flood-hit regions.
Swift Rescue at Zoji La Gorge
In the early hours near Gumri, Zoji La, a civilian vehicle carrying five passengers skidded off the road and plunged nearly 250 feet into a gorge. Army rescue teams reached the spot quickly, pulling out three survivors.
The injured were given immediate medical aid at the nearest Army camp before evacuation to Sub District Hospital, Dras. Two passengers lost their lives in the accident. The Army’s Fire and Fury Corps extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Operation Rahat in Flooded Punjab
Amidst rising waters in Punjab, the Army launched Operation Rahat. Troops evacuated 55 stranded civilians from Narangpur to Gahlari through a Gurudwara safe route.
Relief teams also delivered essential supplies like food, water, and medicines to Ogra and Narangpur villages. The operation highlighted the Army’s swift response in providing aid during natural disasters.
Army’s Dual Role of Defence and Relief
From mountain rescues at Zoji La to flood relief in Punjab, these operations underscore the Army’s dual responsibility of defending the nation and assisting citizens in crisis. The efforts reaffirm the Indian Army’s motto of being “Always with the people.”
