New Delhi: The Indian Navy has signed a contract with M/s Shoft Shipyard Private Limited, Thane, an MSME shipyard, for the construction of 04 x 500-tonne Self-Propelled Fuel Barges.
The agreement was concluded on March 2, 2026, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s domestic shipbuilding ecosystem and maritime logistics capability.

The vessels will be constructed in compliance with IRS classification rules, ensuring high standards of safety, quality, and structural integrity.
Strengthening Harbour Logistics and Operational Readiness
The primary role of these barges will be:
- Replenishment of fuel to Indian Navy ships and submarines
- Operations within harbour limits and at anchorage
- Ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to naval assets
These auxiliary vessels will enhance in-harbour refuelling capacity, reduce turnaround time, and support sustained operational readiness. The self-propelled configuration allows improved manoeuvrability and efficient fuel transfer operations.
Support to MSME Shipyards and Domestic Industry
Awarding the contract to an MSME shipyard reflects the Indian Navy’s continued emphasis on promoting indigenous shipbuilding. The project is expected to:
