Strengthening Harbour Logistics and Operational Readiness

The primary role of these barges will be:

  • Replenishment of fuel to Indian Navy ships and submarines
  • Operations within harbour limits and at anchorage
  • Ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to naval assets

These auxiliary vessels will enhance in-harbour refuelling capacity, reduce turnaround time, and support sustained operational readiness. The self-propelled configuration allows improved manoeuvrability and efficient fuel transfer operations.

Support to MSME Shipyards and Domestic Industry

Awarding the contract to an MSME shipyard reflects the Indian Navy’s continued emphasis on promoting indigenous shipbuilding. The project is expected to:

  • Strengthen MSME participation in defence manufacturing
  • Boost local supply chains and ancillary industries
  • Generate employment and technological capacity building

The move aligns with flagship government initiatives such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Alignment with Maritime India Vision 2030

The contract also supports the objectives of Maritime India Vision 2030, which focuses on strengthening port-led development, enhancing maritime infrastructure, and promoting domestic shipbuilding capabilities.

By expanding indigenous auxiliary vessel construction, the Indian Navy is reinforcing its logistics backbone while contributing to India’s broader maritime growth strategy.

Enhancing India’s Maritime Logistics Backbone

With this contract, the Indian Navy continues its dual focus on operational excellence and self-reliance in defence production. The induction of the four self-propelled fuel barges will significantly improve harbour logistics efficiency and further strengthen India’s maritime support infrastructure.
