In response to the nationwide surge in passenger traffic triggered by widespread flight cancellations, Indian Railways has launched a large-scale operational intervention to ease travel disruptions. On 5 December 2025, the Ministry of Railways announced the deployment of 116 additional coaches across 37 trains, significantly enhancing passenger capacity and ensuring smoother, safer, and more reliable travel across major corridors.
This coordinated augmentation supports both short-distance and long-haul travelers, ensuring continuity of mobility at a time when air travel constraints have strained the nation’s transportation network.
Background of the Nationwide Flight Cancellation Chaos
A series of mass flight cancellations over recent days created overwhelming pressure on India’s rail network. With airports experiencing operational disruptions and thousands of passengers urgently seeking alternative travel routes, the Railways—India’s largest and most accessible mode of transport—became the default choice for millions.
To prevent overcrowding, ticket shortages, and last-minute travel issues, Indian Railways initiated a strategic augmentation of trains, increasing coach composition especially in high-density corridors such as:
- Delhi–Mumbai
- Delhi–Bengaluru
- Delhi–Kolkata
- Chennai–Bengaluru
- Odisha–Delhi
- Northern tourist and pilgrimage routes
This rapid response underscores the Railways’ commitment to maintaining national mobility, even under extraordinary circumstances.
Nationwide Flight Cancellation Chaos: Southern Railway Leads Capacity Expansion
Southern Railway (SR) recorded the highest number of augmentations, enhancing capacity in 18 trains. The additions include:
- Chair Car coaches
- Sleeper Class coaches
Deployed primarily on heavy-demand routes from 6 December 2025, these augmentations significantly expand the southern zone’s ability to absorb redirected air passengers and regular rail users.
Nationwide Flight Cancellation Chaos: Northern Railway Adds Coaches
Northern Railway (NR) implemented augmentations on eight major overnight trains, adding:
- 3AC coaches
- Chair Cars
These additions boost availability along key northern routes, particularly benefiting passengers traveling during late evening and overnight hours—times when demand has risen sharply due to flight uncertainties.
Western Railway Strengthens Its High-Demand Sectors
Western Railway (WR) augmented capacity by adding:
- 3AC coaches
- 2AC coaches
Effective 6 December 2025, these enhancements support the heavy passenger load moving between major western cities and the national capital. This includes increased movement of business travelers and those affected by long-haul flight cancellations.
Eastern and East Coast Railways Focus on Delhi Connectivity
Eastern Railway (ER): The Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi (12309) superfast service received two additional 2AC coaches over five trips between 6–10 December 2025, providing crucial capacity during peak demand.
East Coast Railway (ECOR): To improve connectivity between Odisha and New Delhi, ECOR augmented:
- Bhubaneswar–New Delhi services (Trains 20817/20811/20823)
- Added AC coaches across five trips
This directly supports students, migrant workers, and professionals who frequently use this heavily trafficked corridor.
Central and South Eastern Zones Expand Regional Reach
Eastern Railway (ER): Additional Sleeper Class coaches were added to three key trains over six trips from 7–8 December 2025, improving regional availability.
- North Frontier Railway (NFR)
- NFR introduced augmentations that include:
- 3AC coaches
- Sleeper Class coaches
These enhancements will operate over 13 trips, benefiting long-distance routes in the northeastern region—an area heavily dependent on rail connectivity due to limited air service.
Special Services Launched to Meet Heavy Passenger Flow
To accommodate urgent travel needs, the Railways also deployed special trains:
1. Gorakhpur Special (05591/05592): Operates four trips between 07–09 December 2025
2. Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440): New Delhi – Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan – New Delhi Reserved Vande Bharat. Runs on 06 December 2025
3. New Delhi – Mumbai Central Superfast Special (04002/04001): Operates on 06 and 07 December 2025
4. Hazrat Nizamuddin – Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special (04080): To run one-way on 06 December 2025, It enhances long-distance travel towards the southern region.
These trains ensure fast, comfortable, and urgent connectivity during a period of exceptional passenger load.
A Nationwide Response Ensuring Smooth Travel
Indian Railways’ coordinated capacity augmentation reflects:
- Proactive planning during national travel disruptions
- Commitment to passenger convenience and safety
- Efficient resource deployment across zones
- Sustained availability of accommodation during peak demand
By deploying additional coaches and special trains across multiple regions, the Railways have demonstrated operational agility—ensuring that millions of Indians continue to travel without undue hardship despite disruptions in the aviation sector.
