In a case that stunned the nation, a woman in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district opened a wooden parcel only to find a human body inside. The chilling mystery, dubbed the “Dead Body Parcel Case”, had all the elements of a crime thriller — secrecy, ransom, and deception. Yet, within just one week, it was cracked by a young Kashmiri police officer known for his scientific precision and calm leadership — Superintendent of Police Mr. Adnan Naeem Asmi, a 2013-batch Andhra Pradesh cadre IPS officer.
His remarkable investigation not only solved one of India’s most bizarre crimes but also earned him the K.G.D.P. Medal for Excellence in Investigation, awarded by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The Crime That Shocked a Nation
The case began when Ms. Sagi Tulasi, a resident of Yendagandi village in West Godavari, received a large parcel she believed contained electrical goods. Upon opening it, she found the lifeless body of 47-year-old Mr. B. Parlayya, along with a ransom note demanding over Rs. 1 crore. The parcel’s gruesome contents triggered panic across the district, with initial suspicions pointing to an organized crime syndicate.
But the investigation led by Mr. Asmi soon revealed a far more personal — and disturbing — truth.
How SP Mr. Adnan Naeem Asmi Led the Breakthrough
Upon receiving the case, Mr. Asmi, then serving as SP West Godavari, swiftly formed 11 dedicated investigation teams. The teams included personnel from local police stations, the Central Crime Station (CCS), and the Cybercrime Wing. Responsibilities were divided across forensic analysis, digital tracking, and suspect tracing.
Key leads emerged from digital forensics. Fake mobile numbers used to demand ransom were traced to individuals within the victim’s family circle. Using meticulous coordination between cyber and field teams, investigators uncovered a shocking family conspiracy behind the murder.
A Chilling Family Conspiracy
The prime accused, Mr. Sridhar Varma, his wife Ms. Chekuri Revathi (the victim’s sister), and their associate Ms. Penmetsa Sushma had conspired to use the body of an innocent man to extort money and coerce a relative into relinquishing family property rights.
“It was a macabre plan,” Mr. Asmi recounted. “They intended to create fear by sending a corpse, framing it as part of a ransom plot. Forensic clues, call records, and witness statements helped us piece together the sequence of events.”
Within a week, the investigation team cracked the case — earning praise from the Andhra Pradesh Government and national recognition from the MHA.
Honoured for Excellence in Investigation
For his leadership and investigative brilliance, Mr. Asmi received the K.G.D.P. Medal for Excellence in Investigation. Earlier, he was also awarded the Antrik Suraksha Medal for his service in anti-Naxal operations.
Speaking about the recognition, Mr. Asmi said, “This medal is not just mine — it belongs to my team. Every officer worked tirelessly to bring justice. Policing is not about power, but about service.”
A Profile in Dedication: Who is Mr. Adnan Naeem Asmi?
Born and raised in Nawakadal, Srinagar, Mr. Asmi is part of a new generation of Kashmiri officers redefining Indian policing. A former student of Tyndale Biscoe School and SP College, Srinagar, he secured the top position in the Arts stream and received a gold medal from the then Chief Minister.
He graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi — where he served as College President — and earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from IGNOU.
Joining the IPS in 2013 (Andhra Pradesh cadre), Mr. Asmi has served in various critical roles including Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rampachodavaram; DCP, Visakhapatnam; SP, East Godavari; Group Commandant, Greyhounds; and SP, Krishna.
Currently, as SP West Godavari, he is recognized for his intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and focus on forensic-based investigation.
The Human Behind the Badge
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Asmi credits his success to family support and team effort. “My wife Heena, my son Hamzah, my parents, and my brother Arsalan have been my backbone,” he shared. “My team’s discipline and courage are what make policing effective.”
His story stands as an inspiring testament to how scientific policing, compassion, and teamwork can turn challenges into milestones.
