Bengaluru: In a decisive move following a series of viral videos exposing rampant misconduct inside Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, the Karnataka government has appointed IPS officer Anshu Kumar as the new Chief Superintendent.
He replaces K. Suresh, who was transferred amid mounting outrage over leaked footage showing inmates enjoying illegal privileges inside the state’s largest and most high-security prison.
Viral Clips Spark Outrage: “Party All Night” in Jail
The controversy erupted after consecutive clips from the Central Jail went viral—first showing high-risk inmates using mobile phones and watching television, and later, prisoners singing, dancing, and yelling “party all night” while banging plates and mugs as makeshift instruments.
The videos, allegedly recorded by inmates themselves, triggered a wave of criticism about the collapse of internal discipline and collusion among prison staff.
Government Steps In: ‘Violations Unacceptable’
Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who had earlier promised swift action, confirmed Anshu Kumar’s appointment following a high-level review meeting with senior police and prison officials.
“The government will not tolerate this at any cost. Such violations are unacceptable in a facility meant to hold some of the state’s most sensitive inmates,”
said Dr. Parameshwara.
Officials Suspended, Probe Ordered
Amid public backlash, the state government has suspended Jail Superintendent Mageri and Assistant Superintendent Ashok Bhajantri for dereliction of duty.
The scandal further escalated after revelations that notorious prisoners — including an ISIS recruiter, serial rapist Umesh Reddy, and actor Tarun — were allegedly enjoying VIP-style treatment within the facility.
High-Powered Committee Formed
To ensure accountability, the government has constituted a high-level committee headed by ADGP Jitendra, with IG Sandeep Patil, SP Amarnath Reddy, and SP Rishanth as members.
The panel has been tasked with probing security breaches, staff collusion, and systemic lapses across Karnataka’s prisons and will submit a comprehensive report within one month.
Reforms Announced for Prison Overhaul
In response to the scandal, the Karnataka government has announced sweeping reforms and modernization measures, including:
- Establishment of a central command centre to stream live CCTV feeds from all state prisons.
- Technical audits and installation of upgraded jammers and scanners to block mobile signals and prevent contraband use.
- Rotation of long-serving prison staff to break entrenched internal networks.
Fast-tracked recruitment of 983 warders and 70 jailers to fill critical vacancies and improve supervision.
A Test Case for Prison Reforms in India
The incident has reignited a nationwide debate on prison management, internal corruption, and inmate rights, underscoring the urgent need for reform in India’s correctional system. With IPS officer Anshu Kumar now at the helm, the state government aims to restore order, transparency, and discipline within the Bengaluru Central Jail and beyond.
