New Delhi: The INS Agray ASW Shallow Water Craft induction marks a major step in strengthening India’s maritime security and coastal defence system. The Indian Navy has officially inducted INS Agray, an advanced anti-submarine warfare vessel designed for shallow water operations.

This INS Agray ASW Shallow Water Craft induction highlights India’s growing focus on indigenous defence manufacturing and modern naval capabilities. With increasing underwater threats in the Indian Ocean Region, this move enhances surveillance, detection, and rapid response capabilities along India’s coastline.

What is INS Agray

The Indian Navy has received INS Agray as part of its plan to modernize coastal defence.

This vessel is specially designed for:

  • Anti-submarine warfare
  • Coastal surveillance
  • Mine detection and neutralisation

It will mainly operate in shallow coastal waters, where large warships face difficulty.

Built Under Indigenous Defence Programme

INS Agray has been designed and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

This reflects India’s push towards:

  • Self-reliance in defence manufacturing
  • Strengthening domestic shipbuilding industry

The project follows strict standards of the Indian Register of Shipping, ensuring:

  • High safety
  • Strong structural integrity
  • Reliable performance

What are the Features of INS Agray

INS Agray is equipped with modern systems that make it highly effective in naval operations.

1. Waterjet Propulsion System

Unlike traditional ships, it uses waterjet propulsion.

Benefits include:

  • Better manoeuvrability
  • Lower noise levels (important for stealth operations)

2. Low Acoustic Signature

The vessel produces less noise, making it harder for submarines to detect.

This is crucial for successful anti-submarine missions.

Powerful Anti-Submarine Warfare Capabilities

INS Agray is specially built to detect and neutralize underwater threats.

It is equipped with:

  • Advanced SONAR systems (Sound Navigation and Ranging)
  • Indigenous rocket launchers
  • Lightweight torpedoes

These systems help in:

  • Detecting enemy submarines
  • Tracking underwater movement
  • Launching precise attacks

Designed for Complex Coastal Environments

The ship has a shallow draft design, allowing it to operate in:

  • Coastal regions
  • Narrow sea zones
  • Areas where larger ships cannot go

This makes INS Agray highly effective in protecting:

  • Ports
  • Coastal infrastructure
  • Strategic maritime zones

What is the Importance of INS Agray Induction

The induction comes at a time when underwater threats are increasing in the Indian Ocean.

INS Agray will:

  • Strengthen coastal surveillance
  • Ensure continuous maritime vigilance
  • Prevent stealth intrusions

It will play a key role in maintaining India’s maritime dominance in the region.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence

This induction shows India’s capability to build world-class naval platforms domestically.

It supports:

  • Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission
  • Growth of defence manufacturing sector
  • Reduction in foreign dependency
