TIRUCHY: In a significant development related to the Karur stampede tragedy that claimed 41 lives, 2004-batch IPS officer Asra Garg from the Tamil Nadu cadre has been appointed to the CBI monitoring panel constituted by the Supreme Court. Garg, known for his commitment to justice and bold policing, will now play a key role in ensuring a fair and transparent investigation into the incident that occurred during a public meeting addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Asra Garg’s Role in the Karur Tragedy Investigation
The Madras High Court had earlier constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Inspector General of Police Asra Garg to look into the Karur stampede that took place on September 27, 2025. The incident has triggered widespread public and political concern, prompting the Supreme Court to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under a panel supervised by retired judge Ajay Rastogi.
Garg’s inclusion in the panel has been welcomed by Karur MP Jothimani, who called it a step that would “strengthen public confidence” in the ongoing probe. She emphasized that victims “deserve justice” and called for a timely, impartial investigation.

Political Overtones in the Probe
While welcoming the CBI probe, MP Jothimani raised concerns over the lack of a fixed timeline for completion. She also warned that central agencies could be misused to target the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, given the BJP’s political track record.
She said, “Agencies like CBI, ED, and IT have increasingly been used for political vendetta. The inclusion of a capable and neutral officer like Asra Garg brings hope for a fair process, but we must stay vigilant.”
