Hyderabad: The Telangana government has appointed Battula Shivadhar Reddy, an IPS officer of 1994 batch from Telangana cadre, as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state.
Mr Reddy, who has been serving as the Chief of the Telangana Intelligence Department, replaces Dr. Jitender (IPS: 1992: TG) following his superannuation.
The appointment orders were formally handed over to Reddy by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday. He will also take on the role of DGP (Coordination) in the state.
Veteran Officer with a Distinguished Career
Hailing from Tool-e-Kalan in Pedda Tundla, Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Ranga Reddy district, IPS Reddy is a 1994-batch IPS officer and has served in various capacities across the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and the newly formed Telangana after bifurcation.
Over the course of his distinguished career spanning more than 30 years, he has held numerous critical positions at both the district and state levels.
A law graduate (LL.B.) from Osmania University, Reddy began his professional journey as an advocate before clearing the Civil Services Examination in 1994.

Vast Experience Across Policing Sectors
Mr Reddy’s decorated service includes significant experience across traffic management, intelligence, anti-corruption, personnel, and police administration. He began his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Visakhapatnam district and later served as SP in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur.
Notably, he held key positions during sensitive times, including as DCP South Zone, Hyderabad in the aftermath of the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast, maintaining peace during subsequent communal tensions.
A veteran of the elite Greyhounds force, he also served in the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) in 2003, earning international recognition.
Key Leadership Roles in Telangana and AP
IPS Reddy was the first Chief of Telangana’s Intelligence Department after state formation in 2014. He was later appointed Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam, and served as Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). He also led the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) and the Personnel Wing.
He returned to head the Intelligence Department in 2023 under the newly formed Congress government, and was promoted as DGP in August 2024, continuing in his intelligence leadership role until this latest appointment.
Known for Public-Centric Initiatives
Mr Reddy has been at the forefront of people-oriented policing. He launched –
- “Arrive Alive” campaign in Visakhapatnam to promote road safety
- Public complaint boxes in Telangana to improve police-public interaction
- Promoted CCTV-based crime prevention in collaboration with hotel owners in 2016
In June 2025, he was recognized by the Minister of External Affairs with a Certificate of Excellence for his contribution to the passport verification system through the VeriFast mobile app.

Mr Reddy’s exemplary service has earned him several prestigious awards –
- Police Medal for Gallantry (2002)
- United Nations Medal (2003)
- Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011)
- Asadharan Aasuchana Kushalta Padak (2018) for intelligence work
- President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2020)
Throughout his service, Mr Reddy held key roles across multiple districts. He served as Superintendent of Police in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur, and was also posted in Visakhapatnam, where he later became the city’s Police Commissioner. In Hyderabad, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and in the South Zone.
