Patna: In a significant development for the Bihar cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), the central government has promoted three IPS officers to the rank of Director General (DG). The promoted officers include 1993 batch IPS officer Jitendra Kumar, along with 1994 batch officers Amit Kumar and Anupama Nilekar Chandra. This elevation marks an important milestone for the officers and strengthens Bihar’s representation in senior police leadership roles at the central level.
Promotions of IPS Officers: Details and Impact
The promotions were approved by the central appointments committee, and notifications have been officially issued. While Amit Kumar and Anupama Nilekar Chandra are currently on central deputation, Jitendra Kumar will also receive the DG rank from August 1, 2025, under the Bihar government’s directive.
These appointments underscore the government’s confidence in the capabilities and leadership qualities of these officers. Their elevation to DG rank will enable them to take on more strategic responsibilities in law enforcement and public administration.
Bihar Government Amends State Election Commissioner Tenure Rules
In another administrative move aimed at ensuring continuity and stability in the electoral process, the Bihar government has amended Rule-5 of the Bihar State Election Commissioner (Appointment and Service Conditions) Rules, 2008.
Previously, the tenure of the State Election Commissioner was fixed at five years or until the age of 65, whichever was earlier. The recent amendment now allows for an extension of up to three additional years, permitting the Commissioner to serve for a maximum of eight years or until the age of 68, whichever comes earlier.
Significance of Rule Amendment for State Election Commissioner
The Council of Ministers approved this proposal to enable continuity in the functioning of the State Election Commission. The Panchayati Raj Department highlighted that this extension option aims to maintain consistency in electoral administration, an essential factor for smooth governance and democratic processes in the state.
This amendment provides flexibility to the state government to retain an experienced Election Commissioner beyond the initial term, thereby avoiding frequent leadership changes during critical electoral periods.
Looking Ahead
The simultaneous promotion of IPS officers to senior ranks and the extension of tenure for the State Election Commissioner reflect Bihar’s focus on strengthening governance and law enforcement frameworks. These steps are expected to contribute positively to the administrative efficiency and electoral integrity of the state.
