1991 batch IPS officer B Srinivas, who has been appointed as the new Director General of Puducherry Police, assumed charge on Thursday at the Puducherry Police Headquarters at Dumas Street.
Soon after assuming office, he met Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister N Rangaswamy.
He is the first IPS officer from the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre to head a police force after its merger with the Union Territory cadre.
Prior to his posting in Puducherry, he was serving in Jammu and Kashmir in various capacities, including DGP Prisons, J&K. He is also credited with reviving intelligence operations in the Kashmir Valley after the 2010 unrest.
While Puducherry comprises two districts, Karaikal and Puducherry, Puducherry district comprises the Puducherry region and outlying administrative units of Mahe and Yanam, which are enclaves in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh respectively.
He brings with him expertise in improving intelligence mechanisms in the coastal areas of Puducherry and Mahe.
After the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and division into two union territories in 2019, the erstwhile state’s police cadre was merged with the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre.
On his arrival at the Police Headquarters, he was given a guard of honour by the territorial police. He was received at the Police Headquarters by Additional Director General of Police Anand Mohan, Senior Superintendent of Police, Law and Order, Narra Chaitanya, and other senior officials.
