Dehradun: In a landmark move, the Uttarakhand government has appointed senior Indian Police Service officer Amit Sinha (IPS: 1997: UK) as the first Vice Chancellor of the newly constituted Uttarakhand Sports University. The appointment marks a key step in the state’s efforts to institutionalize sports education and nurture athletic talent through structured academic channels.
One-Year Tenure with Full-Time Responsibility
Amit Sinha, currently serving as Additional Director General (ADG) and Special Principal Secretary to the government, has been appointed to the post for an initial tenure of one year. Though the standard term for Vice Chancellors in state universities is three years, the government has exercised its prerogative to make the first appointment with a shorter term.
Despite the possibility of holding the VC post on a deputation basis, the position is classified as a full-time role. This likely indicates that Sinha will soon be relieved of his existing duties in the police department and the state secretariat to focus fully on building the institutional framework of the new university.
Key Administrative Appointments Made
In addition to Sinha’s appointment, the government has also made crucial administrative postings to support the functioning of the university:
Ashish Chauhan, Director of Sports, will serve as the Registrar of the university.
VN Pandey, currently Finance Officer at the Sports Directorate, has been designated as the Finance Controller of the university.
These appointments reflect the government’s urgency in operationalizing the university and laying a robust administrative foundation from the outset.
